Remaking Final Fantasy 7 could kill the entire franchise

If the pen is mightier than the sword, and a picture is worth a thousand words, how dangerous is a fax?

Final Fantasy 7, possibly the most treasured game in the entire franchise (Even though personally, FF8 was far superior yo), will most likely never ever see a remake. It’s not because the game would be a massive task to recreate in a new HD aspect ratio, but more simply, because it set such a high benchmark, that doing so would murder the entire future of the franchise.

Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada recently told shareholders, that no such remake would be undertaken, until the developer could release a FF game that would surpass the seventh title in the series.

According to Andriasang, doing so would irreparably damage the franchise, especially since the majority of FF games since then have failed to live up to the quality of that Playstation 1 classic.

Released back in 1997, Final Fantasy 7 is still revered and loved to this very day. It created new levels of 3D animation, gameplay and quality back then, becoming a brand in the process. And while we may never see it sequelised at the current rate of FF games, at least there’s plenty of materia out there to keep the brand strong.

You’ve got spin-off games, cameos and even a superb CGI film, Advent Children, which acted as a sequel to the title. But personally, I’m not aching for the game to be remade.

As far as I’m concerned, Square Enix needs to escape that shadow, and if they had to go and update FF7, it would just drag them further into the darkness, and allow for even more stagnation of the brand.
