Remedy isn’t ready to return to Alan Wake…yet

And now for something completely different to Xbox One news! No, I’m lying out of my buttcheeks, this is totally related. This week, Remedy Entertainment took the stage at the Xbox One reveal to show off a trailer for their new game, Quantum Break. Which is kind of cool and sad at the same time, because that means that we won’t be seeing any new Alan Wake games for a while then. But according to Remedy boss Sam Lake, there’s a reason for that.

According to Lake on the humble bundle video that he posted, Remedy won’t be returning to the franchise until they can do it some justice. “We worked hard to make the sequel happen after the first game,” Lake said in the video via Gematsu.

These games are huge undertakings and many things need to fall in place. From the creative perspective, it would be awesome if we could just create cool stuff and not worry about minor details like money, but we all know that that’s not the case.

When Alan Wake came out, it was not a huge hit on day one. It has been doing really well since then, and has moved more than three million – which is a nice figure. But when the game was released, that was not the case immediately. And even though we worked hard on it, the sequel was not happening. The time wasn’t right for that.

Wake is really dear to me and to everyone at Remedy. We knew from the beginning that when Wake wakes up in the dark place, that getting out from there is going to be a long, hellish journey and a hard struggle. And I guess that where we are now is fiction becoming reality.

We definitely want to keep on working on Alan Wake. I definitely want to create something new for Alan Wake when the time is right.

Right now, Remedy is firmly focused on Quantum Break, which lake describes as being “bigger than what we have ever created before.”

It’s a shame that we won’t see Alan Wake again for a while, but at least the door open for that property to return. The first game is now a cult classic masterpiece of suspense and action, while it’s standalone follow-up, American Nightmare is a more adrenaline-loaded deja vu experience.

Alan Wake and the American Nightmare games are currently going for cheap cheap on the Humble Bundle sale, if you still haven’t gotten around to playing them yet. And for a fistful of dollars, that’s a damn bargain.
