Remember, Titanfall 2 has no season pass – because all maps will be free

Games have this horrible habit of costing more than the sticker price – especially multiplayer ones. It’s become too easy for publishers to charge more for modes and maps that come later than the base game.

One way of slightly lessening the cost of all that superfluous content is through the season pass. Pay one lump sum now, and the promised future content is yours without having to buy it up piecemeal. It’s been an effective way of extra monetisation in games for ages now. So prolific, it’s even become expected.

It makes it strange then, to see a big blockbuster game with a multiplayer focus not have a season pass. Titanfall 2 – out tomorrow – is one such game. Developer Respawn committed to free maps earlier this year, saying that maps would be free to all owners.

They’ve reaffirmed that on the game’s site, saying that there will never be a Season Pass.

This means no splitting up the community and it all starts with the legendary Angel City map, remastered from the original Titanfall. This means once you’ve purchased Titanfall 2, your investment includes a full single player campaign, the full multiplayer maps and modes, and long-term support with no hidden costs. You can pre-order the game to play 3 days early, but it will never cost you extra.

I’ve always found extra, paid map content to be good at only one thing – splitting up a game’s userbase in to the haves and the have nots. This is a change in trends that I’d be happy to support.

Especially if it means that Titanfall 2 gets the same level of post-release support the first game did. The Titanfall you can play now is a far cry from the one available at launch, bolstered by maps and modes that have improved the game immensely.

Titanfall 2 is out tomorrow on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it has MT for mech/pilot customisations.

Plot twist: *only one map is released after launch* – and it’s tiny.

See if you complain and bitch long enough and give them gold spray painted shit it does change things.

And they are probably also scared that the game might evolve into to something they do want and then they have to all turtle on us.
