Resident Evil 6 breaks Capcom records

By all accounts, it’s probably not be the best game in the Resident Evil series – but the not-at-all-scary giraffe blowing simulator with a six on the end of it has become the most shipped game in Capcom’s gloriously long history.

According to Siliconera, Resident Evil 6 has shipped 4.5 million copies worldwide to date – which is the largest initial shipment Capcom’s ever put out – besting even what’s probably their biggest franchise, Monster Hunter.

Of course, shipped refers to number of units sent out to retailers, and not number of copies sold to consumers – but it’s a pretty good indicator of demand. In the end, Capcom hopes to sell 7 million units of the game by the end of the 2013’s first quarter.

That’s great for Capcom – but not especially good news for Resident Evil fans. This, like the truly abysmal Operation Raccoon City will sell by the bucketload, telling Capcom executives that this is the  sort of thing people want – no matter how many voices on the internet moan about it.

Resident Evil 6 is out now on PS3 and Xbox 360. A PC version is expected before the world falls to ruin in a zombie apocalypse. Maybe.
