Resident Evil will return to its series roots

resi evil 6

Resident Evil has really taken one hell of a detour in recent years. What was once originally a horror game of Stephen King proportions has now become the Michael Baysplosion of action games. A move which no one has been happy about. And that’s why Resident Evil is going back to basics when the sequel eventually rolls around.

Speaking to MCV, Capcom’s former SVP of marketing Michael Pattison remarked on how wildly different the scores had been for Resident Evil 6 (BOO!) and Resident Evil Revelations (YAY!). “We have obviously seen the consumer response and the PR response,” Pattison said.

There was some great positives out of that, but it was a mixed bag, as we saw from the review scores. We have got to take that on-board, we can’t ignore that, and we have to take that onto the next game when we make the next Resident Evil.

With Resident Evil 6 specifically, we probably put too much content in there, there were comments from consumers that said it felt bloated. The Leon missions went down very well, and because we did Resident Evil Revelations on 3DS, there was a cry out for us to focus our attention on survival horror, rather than be too many things to all people. You’ll find where we go next will likely be more targeted at our core fanbase.

A lot is said about the saturation of this zombie, post-apocalyptic survival horror. But it is still alive and well. The Last of Us shows a good direction of what the consumers want. Tomb Raider as well, we spoke to R&D and they looked at that and they enjoyed that experience. I think that proves there is still a strong market for that sort of content.

I’d be sad to not see Resident Evil appear in the near future. This last generation may have resulted in several games that Tokyo-drifted away from its roots, but fans are forgiving. And if Capcom can bring the tension back, make the user interface less cluttered than my toolbox and focus on making the best game in one genre, instead of ALL the genres then they could have a game that will bring the fans back.

Hell, I’d be first in line for a Resident Evil experience that would help me shed some weight via poop-frights.

“hey guys, survival horror genre is dead. action is where it’s at.”
make an action game based on a survival horror franchise that doesn’t sell well.
      “well that was a surprise.”
a survival horror game makes a lot of money.
“hey guys, we’re going to make a survival horror game.”

I think 4 would be more realistic, but not an HD remake! It’s not enough. Resident evil 2 would change too much because of the pre-rendered backgrounds which also added to the atmosphere and feel I think.

I played my ass off for months to get to the end, got trapped in that small room with the dog/beastie… And I only had handgun bullets left, and not for the big handgun noooooo, only for my 9mm…. I had to replay the whole freaking game, because I only save over the same spot with every game!! Now that was the good old days, no reloading of chapters to make different choices!!

I have never had my joy crushed so much that I had to swallow my pride and admit that Resi 6 was WORSE than resident evil survivor. I still can’t bring myself to finish Resident Evil 6. That being said there may quite well be hope for the franchise but I’m honestly leaning towards the evil within more than the next resident evil title.

I really enjoyed Revelations and was constantly wondering why the fuck RE6 wasn’t in the same light. Who decided to go the Baysplosion route? And CAPCOM tells US that survival horror is dead? Is it just me or does it seem like developers/Corps believe that if they say something, it will be so?

Love the Resident Evil franchise… But am ‘kinda ok’ with the latest efforts. Would love a return to the original, survival horror roots. Revelations shows that it can be done!

Also enjoy the RE movies, for the “skop-skiet-en-donner” movies they are… But they ain’t scary whatsoever! So me thinks, in recent years, the RE movies have influenced the RE games, more than the other way around.

RE1 was my first psone game i ever played.
Back in those days I was still trying to convince my old man to buy me and my brother a console, so we had to rent it from the local videorite, with no memory card, and play all weekend long, petrified of dying and starting all over. the good ol days!

Eventually we got the console and our own copy of the game 🙂

I have such amazing memories from this series, it really was a part of my life as a gamer growing up, and then they flushed it down the shitter, as they do with all things we hold dear.
To see it return to its former roots and glory would be amazing, one of the things we are missing dearly is pure shit yourself survival horror.
