Resistance 2 vs Gears of War 2 – The reality of it all

40 second read

So the two big FPS titles have been released and the first weeks sales estimates are in.

It never was going to be a real competition but I did expect something a little closer.

Gears of War 2 – 1 468 366

Resistance 2 – 304 958

That’s 1.1 million fewer sales for Resistance 2, I don’t think the winner of this battle was ever in doubt but the scale of the loss is quite astounding.

However what is even sadder to see is that LittleBigPlanet is not taking the world by storm, this week it comes in at number 15 with sales of 66 278 which brings it’s US total to a mere 414 897.

Can a game get game of the year with mediocre sales?

is gears classified as a fps?

wow that is astounding…maybe gears 2 vs killzone 2 will be a better match up. although i don’t think there’ll be something better than gears 2 anytime soon…loving it!

    Gears is not a FPS.
As far as I know R2 has not been released worldwide yet.

Although it is not fair to compare them yet, I strongly believe that Gears will kick some serious @ss.

By the way, how sad is this:
    R2 Kalahari: R836
    R2 Take2: R875
    Retail shops +-R900

FFS, add a couple hundred rands and you can buy a new console!

Gears 1 made a much bigger impact on gamers than Resistance 1. This was to be expected.

I have Gears because it is released already. I dont have Resistance because it has not yet been released. Those might be stats, but do they mean anything? To me. No. 😉

I think Killzone 2 is a far more spectacular game.
And LBP is way to gadgety, Show a 14 year old kid Gears 2, Resistance 2 or LBP and 9/10 he’s gonna go for blood and guts

I agree with the comments, you cannot compare R2 and GoW 2 as they are completely different games in different genres (so not dedicated to the same public…).

Plus Resistance 2 hasn’t been released everywhere and as we all know, the Xbox 360 is way more popular than the PS3 so it seems normal that they sell more.

The comparison could have been made if R2 was on Xbox 360. Sorry LazyGamer, but your article has no value…

Actually it have got value, he is just comparing gears vs
resistance on sales in the americas, because from comments all over the webs this holiday season was about r2 vs gears
and which would be the best, etc.

It just show what a beast Gears is, because the next best shooter around this year R2, can only do 1/5 of it sales.

I mean on my friends list almost all that have been logged in the last few days have been playing gears.

LBP and R2 haven’t shot the lights out, but I reckon both are easily going to sell 2 or 3 million over their lifespans. The selling patterns of PS3 games seem a little different to the general Xbox 360 pattern, where first week sales are make or break for a game.

Many PS3 games have week first weeks and then sell well over their lifespans (cf: Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank: tools of Destruction).

Let’s be honest: LittleBigPlanet was never going to sell as much as Gears, but it is already at more than 700K wordlwide, not too bad considering the botched launch. Game might have done better if it wasn’t for the recall, which must have wrecked havoc for the marketing.

Resistance 2’s first week is a lot better than Resistance 1, to be expected since R1 was a launch game. And it is not out in Europe yet, where it will probably debut to a few hundred in sales.

Of the Sony exclusives, the real flop is Motorstom: Pacific Rift. Absolute disaster.

What is with the new PS 3 game prices?
I wanted to get RS2, but looks like only Killzone 2 on my PS3 gaming calendar now.

    I got GOW2 for R430 – lancoza ftw!

    Ma bad. Thanks.
Anyway, Gears 1 was huge for the XBOX. Didn’t expect anything less from Gears 2.

just remember when gears went to pc it got ALOT more fans and MS was smart enough to say it wont be going to PC EVER and that inspired alot of GEoW fans from PC to get it on X360 too

And since a 360 is less than even a half decent Gfx card these days… just makes more sense to own one.

Ya, +1. What you also need to realise it that LBP isn’t really a MUST buy game. Hell I had to ponder long and hard before dropping the R700. Gears on the other hand is probably the block buster game of the decade. It’s a game, like WoW, that people must have at 12.01am on launch day. I’d say give things a bit more time. It’s apparent that no game will touch gears this summer. But US is xbox country. I’m sure LBP and R2 will rack up a couple of million in the next 3-4 months.

GOW2 sales will tapper off drastically very quickly. Its then when i expect R2 & LBP to catch up. It may not reach it but they will close the gap drastically.

“Can a game get game of the year with mediocre sales?”

Well I suppose the question is does awesome sales and income (aka popularity) grand a game GOTY? I think not. Else a game like WoW would’ve been voted GOTY for the past 3-4 years.

Apparently LBP was top in Germany recently, but Gears isn’t released there and I didn’t see Fable on the chart either.
