Hyperkin’s multi-cart retro console, the RetroN 5, has been delayed due to faulty pins found in ready packaged units. Product manager Lawrence Lee apologised for the inconvenience and issued this statement:

“Hyperkin would like to thank you for all the support you have given us throughout the development of the RetroN 5. We are looking forward to its release, estimated to be within the first quarter of 2014, as soon as the issue has been resolved.”

The RetroN 5 can play NES, SNES, GBA, Genesis/Megadrive, and Famicom carts, both PAL and NTSC. It plays with a 6 button bluetooth controller through HDMI with upscaled sprites in 720p. It actually seems really awesome, especially for $100 (USD). Anybody who owns or has owned retro consoles knows how much of a pain it is to play on a modern television. To have something to sort out the visuals and input lag for you is awesome. Hopefully they’ll sort out the problem and all will be well.

  1. That’s something I wouldn’t mind getting… playing the old games would be fun, and it plays a whole bunch of them… but then there’s emulators 😛

    a 100USD seems a bit steep though? That’s more than R1000 currently.

Still a very cool idea though

Just a pity Nintendo build their consoles to survive a nuclear attack.
8, 16, 64, GameCube, fat gameboy and GBA gameboy all still work just fine.

Just got to blow a little 😉

G’day fellow paysano,I’m from the great Aus here too (Melbourne) just read your post too, although having have read similar posts from other dudes all over google. I got to say right now, maybe it’s cuase I’m so disappointed about it,that I have already started to become cynical and cautious..becuase some cunt said straight out, this sounds really weird, cause why and how could you discover faulty pins in systems that were already packed for shipping…and that he will just wait and see what happens, with his Amazon pre order and wait for it to eventually say its been cancelled all together which he is expecting to happen, and fair dinkum,I’m starting to wonder the same thing..like what are the chances they will have a random brain fart to check a bunch of already packed units and discover,.. “oops, fuck, after checking out the internals of this ones the pins on the famicom slot are stuffed..lets delay it now” seriously, I bet there’s something shifty going on man…its been delayed twice now,and I have feeling it will just remain a wet dream for us retro gamer cunts. I give up,nearly…

Things go wrong, especially with mass produced stuff. At least they weren’t like, eh, fuck it, send it out anyway.
