Riot Games win another major lawsuit against EloBuddy

Companies like Riot, Blizzard and Valve are in an ongoing war against third-party platforms which offer software for cheating and hacking in their titles. It often ends up in legal dispute. This now marks the third big lawsuit win for Riot Games this year, with their takedown of a cheating website in January and their big $10 million win over LeagueSharp back in March.

This time, however, they’ve caught the big one – EloBuddy. EloBuddy is a website which offers bots, scripting and third-party software to a number of games. That software includes HonorBuddy, which battled against Blizzard and lost earlier this year too. The announcement came via the EloBuddy Discord by one of the admins who announced the reason behind their lack of updates and communication.

EloBuddy and its other programs are paid for services which aid players in various ways. EloBuddy was a scripting service to allow for hacks like automatically dodging attacks, or casting your own abilities at the perfect times with a click of a button. Naturally, this created an extremely unfair advantage for players who used them, but that’s the least of their concern. The bigger issue was that some other company was making money off Riot’s IP, and not in a good way. Unlike previous reports on lawsuits regarding Riot Games, no amount was made public, and the full reports on the court case have remained vague throughout the proceedings. The final verdict, however, is that EloBuddy is finished, and Riot have won. The company has shut down, and their website now directs to a statement from the owner.

“We are very sorry that we can no longer offer our products and we understand that you may be concerned about this result.

After more than 2 years of operation and many talks later with Riot Games to both pursue our right to operate and our customer’s right to play League of Legends as they chose, we did not prevail in the suit and have been ordered to cease our operations.”

This, of course, only affects League of Legends as EloBuddy will never be able to use this IP again. Their other scripting services are still active, and it’s hard to really try and understand or even justify why players would want to use these kinds of services. Sure, there’s some method in the madness, and it is the choice of the player, but if you’re lazy – stop playing; and if you’re not naturally talented – keep practising.
