Rock ‘n’ roll inspired everything in DOOM

Doom

If you’ve seen id Software’s DOOM in action, you’d quickly realise that it has a certain vibe to it. Because when you’re stuck in a hellish dimension populated by the damned and impatient tweens who bargained their souls for quick-fire guitar lessons, you’d start to realise that DOOM is heavy on the metal, an intentional design decision according to the developer.

“Rock ‘n’ roll was our inspiration for everything,” creative director Hugo Martin told Game Informer as part of the February cover story feature on that game.

There is a lot of heavy metal in our hell, and that is intentional. When you look at the original Doom, we always said it looks like the kind of stuff a 15-year-old would draw on the back of his notebook during math class.

We really wanted the world to look like that–to have a personality that would shine through in everything we did. So we have a lot of skulls; it’s kind of over-the-top. A little bit of Castle Grayskull in there; it’s very He-Man.

Martin also spoke about another feature of the game, which hasn’t really had much of a presence in any iteration of DOOM: An actual story.  While a rolling and rocking narrative won’t exactly be present, there’ll still be some lore scattered around for those players who are curious about how the world has gone to hell in a hand basket.  “Story isn’t something big in a Doom game, and we’ve taken that approach,” Martin explained.

It’s not what people come to Doom for; they come to kill demons and blow sh** up in amazing ways. That’s really been the focus for us. That said, we’ve definitely infused some pretty good mystery and some fun things for players who want to find it and want to dive in and explore it a little bit.

DOOM is out later this year apparently, in the northern Spring for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Amazon France reckons that you can expect the game to launch on June 30, if the rumours are true.  A beta should be available before launch, so you can get a feel for id’s old-school shooter with new-school gory visuals. Because chainsawing demons in half, is an experience which never gets old.

Explains why no braincells are required to play the game 😛

I found it interesting that Doom was an accident, when they pitched the game they did not bother with the indented 3rd person as it was just a draft. But what they found was that by not having a 3rd person the frame rate increased. So they decided to keep the first person halving the production time and cost making it the original FPS.

Ya the 3d FPS was Wolfenstein 3D 1992, Blake Stone was the same year as Doom 1993. Crazy Times. I wonder what all those kids are doing now 😛

Doom was released just after Spear of Destiny. That said Doom was where multiplayer really started.

It was Far Cry 3 that jumped on that band wagon first. Hats off to them tho, they did have a crazy sound track including Die Antword.

COD was great, well COD MW 2 was thanks to Hans Zimmer. Then it went silly.

On social media you have to make a huge statement about how upset you are, but keep it as ambiguous as possible so no one knows what you’re talking about.
