Yesterday finally saw the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC. The game uses Rockstar’s own launcher, and will only be released on Steam next month. Unfortunately for would-be PC cowboys, the game hasn’t had the smoothest of launches. The first, and biggest problem is that the Rockstar launcher had a horrible habit of crashing on startup, preventing the game from event starting.
Thankfully, Rockstar’s released an updated launcher that should fix that particular issue. Here’s what’s new and/or improved in the newer launcher:
- Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher returning the error “The Rockstar Games Launcher failed to initialize” on startup
- Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher preload decryption getting stuck and not completing
- Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher returning the error “The Rockstar Games Launcher exited unexpectedly” when launching Red Dead Redemption 2
- Fixed an issue that resulted in crashes when starting the Rockstar Games Launcher from the Epic Games Launcher
- Fixed an issue that resulted in the Rockstar Games Launcher returning the error “Unable to launch game, please verify your game data” when launching Red Dead Redemption 2 from the Epic Games Launcher
That said, some have reported that the new launcher hasn’t nixed their PC gaming woes. The other major problem that PC gamers have noticed is that despite having suitably beefy PCs, there are performance issues. Even those whose specs far exceed the recommended ones are finding their machines struggling with running in high or ultra settings – and many struggling to even run at medium.
There are also apparently stuttering problems, that seem to be related to multi-core balancing, so using something like Process Lasso or setting core affinity manually seems to help.
Those who’re running the game on Nvidia hardware have also found that switching from Vulkan to DirectX12 has also helped with random frame drops.

Hmm. Didn’t have any launcher issues. Did have some frame rate issues, but not that many. It’s still an awesome, jaw dropping beautiful piece of art.

I plum forgot that the game is coming to PC. Outer Worlds is just a more gripping game I guess.

I guess it is to be expected, but there was always the possibility that the issues would have been far fewer if they had chosen to release the game on Steam at the same time rather than delayed. I’m sure most would have preferred to buy it through Steam, so at least one of their issues would have been eliminated.

Gonna give you another for your blasphemy. Everybody knows PC is far superior XD.
Man, I’m just happy PC players get to enjoy this. I’m not buying a second copy for pc, but it was a great game at the time. More platforms, more choice and more games for everyone is the future I’d like to see.

For me It did crash twice last night while playing but the level of detail is beyond anything I have ever seen. Im pretty sure these crashes will be fixed soon. And about the framerate, just slide the details slider untill you have 60fps.The NVidia recommended settings throws me into the 50s (put everything on Ultra?) and ja, thats not what you want. Game still looks amazing!

Firstly it is QA because software. Secondly they do in fact do “QC” they have an extended range of “QC” testers called super fans who pre-ordered.

But the software is already “out” hence why I said QC since they need testers (super fans, muppets, etc) to actually test this. So they either didn’t do this, or did it, and didn’t even consider or listen to the feedback.
In all cases, fail

Ah who cares … everyone is too busy playing Outer Worlds. Also that game has very little bugs. To be fair though the Unreal Engine is the smoothest bug-less engine out there.

Whatever you do, do not do this! Broke the game for me, could not even boot it. I had to delete the settings.xml file to create a new one and defaulting back to vulkan. No problems after that.
