Assassin’s Creed Unity is, without a doubt, one of this year’s biggest releases. Not only is it a soft reboot for the franchise, it’s also our first taste of a true next-generation Assassin’s Creed title. But will it be running at full HD by the time PS4 players we get their hands on it?
While some are off enjoying their weekends, others have their eyes glued to digital store listings, which revealed some peculiar details about Unity on the PS4. Right now, Sony lists the game on PSN with an output resolution of 720p. Not the 1080p the title was assumed to be running at.
It’s important to take note that other titles who have had their resolution confirmed, such as Diablo III, have 1080p listed as their resolution output. So it’s not a discrepancy between minimum output and native.
There could be a few explanations for this though. It could be that Ubisoft hasn’t yet locked down the final specifications for Unity, making the 720p listing a placeholder. Considering how a man is attempting to sue Sony for lying about Killzone: Shadow Fall’s resolution, you can understand why Ubisoft wouldn’t want to jump the gun.
Or, it could just be a mistake. Ubisoft has stated before that they are aiming to reach 1080p and 60 FPS on both PS4 and Xbox One, and it would be surprising if they at least don’t reach that on Sony’s hardware. A game running below 1080p on the PS4 is almost like seeing the sun in the UK; unheard of.
Ubisoft is bound to comment of these rumours soon, so expect an update in the near future.

This resolution issue is a non issue as long as the upscaling makes it look like full 1080. Has there been any comparison done to see what upscaled 720 vs native 1080 looks like?

I can understand a resolution argument on PC as PC can’t upscale (or at least doesn’t) . But on console it’s really something that should go away.

You do realize that 720p is 921600 pixels versus the 2073600 pixels of 1080p? That’s 66.6% of the pixels that they need to add in to make it 1080p. It’s very easy to spot even on a desktop screen.

Depends on the size of screen you are doing the tests on. Anything bigger than 42″ , the 66.6% difference in pixels become apparent.

You can see the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 30inc tv. Test it you will be surprised if you cant see a difference then dont bother cause your eyes are to bad to pick it up and thus you will be happy with 720p.

It’s very easy to see on PC as there is no upscaling. 720p on a 1080p monitor causes a bit of “blurry” edging.
But on console I bet you can’t tell as both units do proper upsacling
