South Africa’s favourite “Tech Girl” Samantha Wright will be joining the ESL African Championship broadcast team armed with a microphone to interview and chat to players taking part in the competition. Announced via her YouTube channel, Sam barely contained her excitement as she announced her involvement along with some viewer giveaways. Sam will join an array of local broadcasters, who are yet to be announced, alongside international casting duo Pansy and Moses.

Sam, an avid blogger, tech enthusiast and growing esports host recently returned from Cologne, Germany, where she hosted the stage for a fan CS:GO tournament for ESL at Gamescom. Locally, she has made a name for herself being the host for everything Mettlestate, including her own Valkyrie Challenge – South Africa’s first all-female CS:GO show match. Her presence in the local esports scene is refreshing as South Africa’s infancy in the global industry has left room for a number of noticeable differences in the overall atmosphere and removing the stigma of a “male-dominated” community. While those problems are still prevalent, Sam has made a point of keeping a strong female presence in the growing South African scene.

Sam is also a member of Code Red, an international talent agency headed up by Paul “ReDeYe” Challoner who co-hosted the Digital Gaming League Masters (now VS Gaming Masters) alongside Sam in 2016. Sam will most likely be joined by other local broadcasters who have frequented the two seasons of ESL Africa. These include Nathaneal “BurningRed” Slabert, Michael “Axtremes” Harmse, Shaun “Profeci” Murrel, Stephen “Ph4nt0m” Cloete, Matthew “HaZe” Stott and Adam “WhaM” Potepski. It’s unclear who exactly will be making up the remainder of the broadcast team, as ESL and Kwese have yet to reveal the roster.
