Section 8 – New FPS looking to Fail or Fly?

Although our focus has been on Killzone 2 recently, I have been hearing the name “Section 8” quite a lot lately, so I decided to go and see what all the fuss was about.

Turns out that it is a new first person shooter that will be releasing on the PC and Xbox 360. I t seems that some dung hit the air-conditioner a little while back though as it was thought that it would release on both Xbox 360 and PS3 but later confirmed to only be releasing on the Xbox 360 console.

Some are calling it a mix between Halo and Crysis, which does sound at least a little bit interesting and from the video above, it is clear that there is some potential there, however I cannot help but feel that this game may become another Haze, quickly forgotten and for good reason.

I have put up some early screenshots, after the jump.

I really haven’t seen enough of this game to really say how I feel about it, but I honestly can’t help but feel like it just doesn’t have anywhere near the required amount of polish to take on big boys out there like COD, Crysis, Killzone 2, Halo and all the others.

Anyone else notice that the beginning of the video felt a bit similar to the introduction to Quake 2?

Section 8 is set for a 2009 release.

  1. Rumor: Section 8 A Timed PS3 Exclusive

We’ve recently received an update regarding the scenario for Section 8 on the PlayStation 3. While the details are sketchy, there’s a strong possibility that the game could still make it onto the PlayStation 3, it just might not be this year.

Before going any further, I should first inform gamers about Section 8; it has nothing to do with the Government housing act. This first-person shooter is designed by the same people who brought you the F.E.A.R expansion pack, and the game focuses heavily on squad-based combat, which means that it’s already better than Halo 3. There’s ground assault vehicles and operable flying vehicles in this game as well…massive environments and orbital dropping is also present. You can check the new screenshots by clicking on this link.

Now a few days ago we reported that this 2009 shooter wouldn’t be making it to the PS3 this year. Based on the game’s late 2009 release date and a delayed launch of the PS3 version of the game, this information still may hold true.

According to a recent tip from a SouthPeak affiliate, the PS3 version of Section 8 hasn’t officially been canceled, and the company will “…be in a position to discuss the PS3 version of Section 8 soon”. This would explain why the game has a 2009 release spanning only the PC and Xbox 360. Expect some exclusive content for the PS3 version when it does land on retailer shelves, though. Similar to what happened with Alone in the Dark, Eternal Sonata or Bioshock for the 360 and the extended editions of Alone in the Dark: Inferno, Bioshock, and other ported titles for the PS3. Thus, the timed-release of the PS3 version of Section 8 could maintain exclusivity with content not found on the other two platforms.

We tried digging a little deeper but SouthPeak isn’t talking much about it at this point. Besides, if it was anything related to development issues on the PS3 hardware, it wouldn’t make for good press for Sony’s PS3 or TimeGate Studios.

We’ll continue to keep you posted on news regarding Section 8 here at Blend Games. If you want more info on the game feel free to visit SouthPeak Interactive’s Website.
