Sega De-listing “Average” Sonic Games

Sega, through an interview, have announced they will be de-listing all the poor or average Sonic games in lieu of the upcoming Sonic Colours (available for Wii and DS) and Sonic 4 Episode 1(available on practically everything).

According to Sega SVP Jurgen Post, they “have to do this” to “increase the value of the brand.” Noble words, Mr Post, just a pity you are 10 years too late.

Mr Post continued with, “We could make a lot of money on back-catalogue Sonic titles, but let’s keep the number of Sonic games available under control. Otherwise you can have cannibalisation. If there are ten Sonic games on the shelves, with people seeing Sonic Rush DS or Sonic Rush Adventure, this may not help our overall strategy.”

Thats all good and well, but there hasn’t been a good Sonic game on a home console since Sonic Adventure (1999 DC) and the last good handheld one was Sonic Rush (2002 GBA). In the ten years between Sonic Adventure and now, there have been 10 home console Sonic titles. I think its a little late to worry about brand dilution, so perhaps this is more of a “lets just sweep away the last ten years of Sonic and pretend they didn’t happen”?

I wholeheartedly approve of that, since I like Sonic and feel he needs some good games for a change. Initial reports indicate both Sonic Colours and Sonic 4 are good, so lets keep hoping shall we?

Incidentally, Sonic 4 Episode 1 is now available for your iDevice of choice, for the princely sum of $10 (+-R70).
