Sequels…sequels…sequels
Has anybody watched the latest Indiana Jones? Do you wish, in hindsight, when comparing it to the first three, that you had not. Did you wish Lucas didn’t release Episodes 1 through 3? How did Lara Croft fall from gaming icon to Angel of Darkness laughing stock (I think Tomb Raider sucked from day one, but that’s beside the point)?

Now don’t get it twisted. I know for every 10 poor franchises, you get the Final Fantasy franchise (whose fantasy is never actually ‘final’, by the way) and you get GTA, along with Metal Gear, etc, etc, but this post is about those games that start well and end up going horribly wrong.

Word has it that our beloved Bioshock really, really, really is going to be milked for every drop it is worth. Joystiq reports that in a recent shareholder’s call, CEO Strauss Zelnick stated: “it’s unlikely that [the movie] would be released alongside BioShock 2…and it’s more likely that it would be released alongside BioShock 3, but that remains to be seen.” No, that’s not a typo: BioShock THREE.

Bioshock 3? Can we go back to Rapture? Not once more, but at least twice more? Do we want to go back to Rapture? I loved every minute of Bioshock, however, I found Rapture and the game’s atmosphere to be exceptionally disturbing, and upon completion of the game, even though I loved every moment of it, I could never go back. I didn’t want to go back.

So tell me: what do you think of the sequel nature of gaming (or any entertainment medium for that matter)? I sympathise with the people who own publishing firms, for, as a shareholder, you want (and deserve) that money. Yet, as a consumer of these products, I can’t say I’m a fan of killing good memories.

There are some IPs that were always planned to be franchises. Assasin’s Creed for example (waits for those who didn’t like it to finish throwing up), was always going to be a franchise.

I don’t mind sequels, but you gotta know when to stop. Bioshock trilogy, fine, bring it, but DO IT RIGHT and don’t make a Bioshock 4.

Some IPs can indeed carry itself through 13 iterations, some can have one sequel, some can be triliogies. The trick is knowing when it’s a good idea to stop. There’s nothing worse than doing one too many and messing up your IP.

I’m not sure but I think I read somewhere that Bioshock 2 might be a prequel to the 1st.

Also if there’s a 3rd… well remember the ending?
You could just continue from there, right?

Bioshock 2 or 3 does not have to be in Rapture either…

It’s amazing how they can totally wreck a franchise before they’ve even released a sequel.
