Shadow of War is now free of microtransactions

Hobbit Smaug

I don’t think that microtransactions in video games are inherently evil. Rather, its how they’re applied that sends a strong message to fans of a product, that really says a lot. There’s no louder way to get your point across than with your wallet these days, and that’s something that Warner Bros. Interactive and Monolith have finally learnt as Shadow of War has decided to kill off most of its extra premium content.

Almost 300 days later, Shadow of War is now a drastically different gold after its latest patch, which saw the game’s secondary premium currency and hand-rubbing Orc pulled from the base game. Announced back in April, Shadow of War’s latest update comes hot on the heels of a particularly contentious 2017 of an industry that reached peak greed with loot boxes and fluffy cosmetic add-ons.

From 2K’s obnoxious inclusion of items that were designed to make your credit card tap out in their latest WWE and NBA games to EA’s legendary f***-up in Star Wars: Battlefront II, just about every single publisher was after a few extra bucks last year. 2018 then, is the year where publishers are taking notice and making changes to their games. While also paying attention to Games As a Service ™, probably. Hey, gotta make that extra scratch in some manner that doesn’t make people regard you as a money-hungry greed factory!

Here’s the full list of tweaks and changes in Shadow of War, straight from the Hobbit’s mouth:

Removal of the Market

Oh no orc bro

The market and microtransactions have been completely removed from Shadow of War. Orcs recruited through Online Vendettas and Ranked Conquests will now be stored in the Garrison, and in-game Mirian can now be used to train, upgrade and customize your personal Orc army.

Changes to the Shadow Wars

Renamed the Epilogue, the post-campaign has been vastly streamlined to include new narration from Shelob, the Witch-king and Dark Talion. Victory in the Epilogue rewards players with the Masks of the Nazgûl, unlocks powerful new abilities to raise the dead, curse enemies and summons more powerful monsters. And players also have the option to continue upgrading and defending their fortresses and army in Mordor after the final credits conclude.

More Ways to Customize & Build Your Character

The follower level cap has now been increased to 80 and the enemy Captain level cap has been increased to 85. Plus, players can level up faster with greater XP rewards for Nemesis Missions, defeating Captains and Online Conquests. New Prestige Skills are available and offer incremental upgrades to skills. Players can also spend Mirian to upgrade gear to current levels by completing the upgrade challenge, and these gear upgrades now allow players to re-roll abilities for the perfect combo.

Nemesis Improvements

There are more Legendary Orcs to encounter, more ways to get Training Orders (incl. Legendary Training Orders) and followers can now surprise players with the occasional gift. And if any followers are too keen to help out and have been stealing kills, there is now the option to turn off the Savior feature in the menu.

New Player Skins

Players can now take the fight to Sauron as Celebrimbor, reliving the first War for Mordor, or battle as Dark Eltariel and Baranor.

Shadow of War is still an excellent game I reckon, one that’ll feel even better in action now thanks to these changes which highlight the idea of growing a mighty army of Orcs with which to do battle across Mordor. Even better, recent DLC episodes focused on other characters have been quite chuffing good, so that’s some content right there that is well worth spending some extra coin on.

    Okay so listen to this.

Epic Games recently reduced their Llama (Read lootbox) prices from 100 vBucks to 50 vBucks in Fortnight:Save the World (The good pve Fortnite). When they did that they had no reason to do anything more but instead they opted to give everyone a Llama for every single Llama they previously had purchased before they price reduction.

Secondly they increased the amount of money creators get from their content made for the Unreal engine because of the huge success of Fortnite:Battle Royal (the boring Fortnite).

Why isn’t anyone ever reporting on how FUCKING AWESOME EPIC GAMES are!!!!

I mean it’s in their name. Hardly need to report it. Just say: “Epic”.

Hahahaha …. I suppose but they really need more mentions because they keep doing things not because they got caught doing something bad like with Shadow of War. They just keep doing awesome things because “We can”

Sadly the media loves bad press, and just barely covers good press, most of the time. There are some unbiased sites (like this one), but it’s not the norm. Bad news sells and/or drives traffic, which = revenue. Capitalism.

Or they just outright lie like Kotaku and RPS on the Jessica Price story.

Oh fake news = sensationalism = traffic = revenue. Same thing, just worse. So yeah 100%. Meh.

I saw someone mention that person in the comments here last week (could have been you), and then I watched some commentary on the situation from some moderate and conservative channels*, and while I would not myself have dismissed them (warning, public apology etc), it is a crappy situation started by her and escalated by her, and then blown out of proportion sans facts by certain publications. And now she keeps digging…

*I skip the SJW channels, and it seems there are very few “left leaning” channels that even try to look objective these days.

It could have indeed been me. I just got so mad at how that turned out. It actually got worse and now there is a hit piece on Totalbiscuit that basically says he should have died much earlier so that he could not have caused gamersgate. I mean WTF!

Isn’t the PvE going F2P sometime this year? Or have they scrapped that plan?

They have not but the $20 buys you early access plus a bunch of good that help you out at the start so it is still worth it. You get some exclusive icons (meh) and 7 llamas 1 of witch is a founders llama with weapons you won’t get anywhere else.

Also Epic is the on company that I don’t mind throwing cash at every now and then. I mean they refunded all microtranactions when they shut down that 1 game. Good guy Epic.

Yeah, hats off to them for that.
I’ll check Fortnite PvE out when it goes F2P. If I start getting into, guarantee I’ll spend money. I always support the F2P games that I really enjoy.

I got it on sale and have been enjoying it.
That said, I don’t like the T&C that you are required to agree to for online access so I haven’t had the opportunity to experience the money-grubbing.

Picked this up on the sale. Really loved the first one but I was not willing to pay to get the best Orcs etc. etc. and hated the money grab but after hearing they are removing the MT cr*p it seems far more worth it. The only issue I have now is that 120GB download…. 😛

MORE IMPORTANTLY, ARE THEY GOING TO PAY BACK ALL THE MONEY THAT PLAYERS SPENT ON THEIR MT’s?
