A bunch of American Doctors fitness authorities with the The American Council on Exercise (ACE), has studied the efficacy of Nintendo’s Wii Fit and, unsurprisingly, found it lacking. The study which tested both men and women between the ages of 20 and 24 found that Wii Fit, a video game, produced “underwhelming results,” in terms of exercise intensity.

They tested the game’s most “aerobically challenging activities,” Free Run, Island Run, Free Step, Advanced Step, Super Hula Hoop and Rhythm Boxing for their gross energy expenditure, and found that players burned an average of 165 calories per 30 minutes of play. If you take in to consideration that a McDonald’s Quarter Pounder with Cheese® provides 530 calories, you’d have to swing your hips like a time-warping transsexual for over an hour and a half just to negate it.

The minigames -  Rhythm Boxing, Super Hula Hoop, Advanced Step, and Free Step -  burned off 114, 111, 108 and 99 calories respectively during their allotted times. A result that would make even Captain Obvious facepalm, the researches found that performing real exercises, as opposed to Wii fit’s virtual approximations yielded “significantly higher” calorie expenditure.

The Rhythm Boxing, where you’re pretending to punch something that isn’t there, burns only a third of what real boxing would. Ya don’t say. What was surprising was the research team’s conclusion :

“While we found that playing the Wii Fit burns twice as many calories as a sedentary video game”the outcome of the study suggests that Wii Sports, the Wii’s suite of exergames that includes tennis, boxing, golf and bowling, is a better option and more capable of helping consumers meet minimum intensity guidelines for exercise.”

The free pack-in Wii Sports provides better exercise than Wii Fit. If you really can’t – for whatever reasons – do any proper exercise and have to opt for a videogame version, then EA Sports Active is apparentlybe your best bet – you fat, lazy slob.
