Shovel

Shovel Knight is a fantastic throwback game that you should have played, but probably haven’t. Released in 2014 by Yacht Games, it is one of the best platformer-action games ever made – whether you were weaned off of the NES games that obviously inspired it or not. It’s available on just about everything these days: Pc, Wii U, 3DS – and it recently made its way to PlayStation and Xbox Platforms too, featuring extra content. On Xbox, it brings back the Battletoads…and it’s amazing.

Here’s a look at the very spoiler-filled boss fight(s!) when you go up against the Battletoads in the Xbox One version of the game, which is now available for you to download (something I recommend you do, because it is awesome.)

The way that Yacht games has gone above and beyond to bring Battletoads to life in their game deserves commendation. And while they did the same, adding Kratos to the PlayStation versions of the game, it just didn’t have the soul or character. That, and Kratos is dull to begin with. Here’s a look at the Kratos fight. Once again, spoilers.

What does give the PlayStation versions a bit of a leg up though, is that they feature cross buy and cross save, giving you 3 versions of the game for one price.

If you haven’t played Shovel Knight, you should. It’s a game I can’t recommend hard enough for fans of old-school action platforming games. I’m not a fan of games that are retro just for the sake of it – and though it toys with your nostalgia, it certainly doesn’t rely on it – offering hours and hours of great content, hidden areas, secret boss fights. It’s genuinely something special. And now with Battletoads in it, it’s something…specialer.

Nostalgia for me is not these kinds of games. For me it’s Final Fantasy VIII, Tony Hawks Pro Skater and MGS1
