No man sky

IGN is having a month of No Man’s Sky exclusive first looks. It looks like they just locked Sean Murray in their theater and played through the latest build of the game, later chopping it into video-sized pieces. However, this time, they let IGN reporter, Ryan McCaffrey, take control and the results aren’t as cool as I’d hoped.

I had imagined that I’d spend much of my time exploring the various planets, but I won’t do it like it’s done in this video. Also, warning: if you suffer from any form of FPS nausea of simulator sickness, this might cause you to feel a bit queasy.

I know it’s just watching someone man the controls who doesn’t know what he’s doing, but I feel rather underwhelmed. I’d glad they cut back to the people in the theater every now and then because at least I could see the gleeful smile on McCaffrey’s face, even if I didn’t feel the same. Why did he just wander aimlessly? Why did he shoot that poor creature? I just have no idea what he was doing and it felt like a waste of precious few minutes with the game. Plus, thanks to his camera skills, I felt a bit ill while watching.

I’m not a fan of watching new players figure out Minecraft, nor do I like watching people figure out much of any game. I’m not claiming that I will be better at No Man’s Sky when I eventually get my hands on it, but I’m just rather disappointed. The video feels soulless and the game seems boring. I’m sure it’s more a result of having someone play it who doesn’t know what he’s doing, but it does not put the game in the best light.

What a shame – I’m still excited for No Man’s Sky, but I don’t have that same gut feeling about it. Maybe I just need a Valoid.

I’ll not be watching this then, (the video, not the game)

I’m still optimistic about it, I like me some exploration

Hmm…Video didn’t diminish my hype in the least. Everyone’s experience will be different. I still maintain, there are thousands of games that follow a set pattern, who knows if this game will be boring or exciting. It’s all about chance and taking a leap. Maybe I’m overly optimistic but hey, it’s rare to not know what to expect from a game these days.

Looking at the video it hasn’t deminished my hype. I reckon that playing this game you need to play it with a goal in mind. You are going to need to do some out of game “roleplaying” as such to get in to it.

I’m still very curious to see how this game pans out. Heck even if it’s just a method of aimlesly browsing random planets to calm down and zone out after a hard day it could still be a worth while game to have IMHO.

That being said. Only time will tell

My daughter is 5 and she still gets into my bed every night. Me and the wife gave up when she was 2-3. I will rather sleep than have to fight with her over her own bed 4 times per night.

Well, that rule is OUT in our house, but my wife has to go sit with her some nights (she is 6, my daughter, not the wife). Problem is, then she falls asleep there and I have to smell my own farts

I really don’t care what my daughter or wife does through the night as long as I am allowed to sleep my 8 hours then I am happy.

Honestly, yeah. I think a lot of the enjoyment will be the responsibility of us, the people playing the game. It’s like the ultimate sandbox, and you have to be able to create your own fun out of this endless opportunity that exists. Because if you don’t, then all you’ll see is nothing. When in fact, there’s so much, it’s just in your hands to find or create it.

I’m still excited. And this guy in the video is a douche. Violence will be a last resort for me I think. I want to explore, catalogue, and have fun.

I think many people play games to complete goal (In one form or other).

There are no goals or quests in this game, so when you reach your “own goal” the game won’t acknowledge that or reward you appropriately and I think this will be the problem with No Man’s Sky.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still get it and have a good look at it, but I do think it will not be as cool as people envision. But that being said, I do hope they prove me wrong.

actually there can be types of accomplishments, like you can wipe out a entire species on a planet and get some kind of memorable thing for it, event though that would be a heinous thing to do. there’s other stuff like that too, but you dont have to do anything. the main goal of the game itself is to just get to the center of the galaxy.

I need a new amp, my last one blew and I haven’t had the cash to buy a new one. Although I play regular guitar, not bass. I still have my acoustic to tide me over, but I need some grunge in my life. 🙁

I feel you man… I must say though, I’ve always loved my little acoustic, the fact that it’s well travelled also adds to it’s sound a little… As far as amps go, I’ve been looking to get my hands on a Craig Amp, manufactured by a guy in Nelspruit…I have not heard a sound as good as that in a very long time…But unfortunately, they are pricey…very much so…

Im pretty hyped for this but, can they not show the same goddamn thing every time?

    – Player lands on planet
    – Player looks around
    – Player heads to the already constructed building.
    – Player shoots one or 2 things with his “Kill Everything” Gun.
    – End

Is there nothing else to do? Can you not craft stuff or make/buy a better ship? Fight stronger enemies?

well you pick crafting stuff up, so yeah, crafting is a thing.
i want to know if theres a space station or central hub you visit to break up the monotony of explore, move on, explore, move on.

they seem pretty adamant about not showing us very much.

Thing is, these demos they are playing are supposed to be specifically designed to show off the game at events and stuff. So they are already skipping the boring planets to show us the ones with lifeand stuff to do on. They arent doing a good job of selling this atm.

Still, im giving it the benefit of the doubt as there’s still a long time before release.

i just think that with what theyr showing, it looks pretty casual.
something you can drop an hour into and feel fine with shutting down and coming back later.

When a person that isn’t a dev or creator plays you can best see how the gameplay experience will be. 90% of us thats getting the game will do exactly the same, fly to a planet, land on a building like a boss, see a creature and shoot the earth under it to oblivion.

I been worried ever since i heard how big this project is. I still say that even though there is a no real objective i find that ill get bored fairly quickly. Id most probably end up exploring one planet and then uninstall lol Lately large games of over 40 hours or more cant hold my attention span like it used to. Im not sure if it just isnt as interesting or exciting as previous games like Residential Evil 2 when you actually had to figure some awesome riddles and puzzles or its just that a game is way too big nowadays. Does anyone else have this issue with gaming lately? Maybe its cause a persons life is just so busy with so many things that you just cant seem to relax and take the time to play cause at the back of your mind you thinking shit i need to do this or i need to go there and do that later. Anyway id still give this game a go, but im sure thats what id end up doing once I get it.

The article should be titled “Six minutes of No Man’s Sky with an IGN idiot at the controls is reassuring, intelligent people are still required for a game demo to be good.” 😉

Give an idiot six minutes of any game, and see the worst six minutes of that game. In fact IGN routinely does terrible hands on, the last I remember was a test chamber by Kimberley Wallace and Witcher 3. shudder. If that was the Witcher 3’s only hands on video coverage, I think the sales would have been less than stellar. And quite obviously, without an objective, anyone playing wouldn’t really have a reason to “do” anything constructive. Shooting holes in the ground under oneself, yeah that’s smart. 😉

I also think we should not be so conditioned to only gobble down high gloss, fake, pre-rendered, Ubisoft-style trailers that promise the world, and fail to deliver at launch. “Oh it doesn’t look a game I already know, not my thing…” is a symptom of a conditioned mindset fed on the lies of the Pitchford’s, Molyneux’s and Cage’s.

NMS is what gamers should want from the industry – a very different game, and we as gamers, should embrace and support it – even if it is just a huge glorious failed experiment, because I for one, would like more huge glorious expensive experiments in gaming. My 2c.

So you’re basically worried about the game because you just watched someone figuring it out for the first time, something you very clearly mention that you don’t enjoy ?

Unbelievable journalism skills on display here.

I just find it amusing that an entire advanced civilization would even care if you shot a space goat or whatever it is. If an alien came here and shot one of our animals, we’d just be like, “k…soooo….you don’t like goats?”

I’m sure VR games will intentionally educate us to start appreciating the details and scenarios, instead of trying to beat then in 8 hours. That’s what’s wrong with the last 15 years. Everyone just wants to finish, upgrade to the max, so on and so forth… just… chill, dude!
Why do you want a high end machine to push the graphics to the max if you’re not even interested in the richness of the map?
We are finally getting the chance to experience other worlds, new experiences, a true second life! Why not wonder free roam?
And this whole deal about him trying this game for the first time, maybe he was just doing the right thing! Was he supposed to start a campaign in 6 minutes?
