Skipping Modern Warfare was a “long decision”

The next Call of Duty – from the guys who brought you Modern Warfare (and the Modern Warfare 2…and then Modern Warfare 3) won’t be set within the same universe as those games. Instead, Ghosts gets its own unique narrative and setting. That was a long decision for the folks at Infinity Ward – but not an entirely difficult one.

The game’s executive producer Mark Rubin, speaking to MCV, explained the decision to leave the modern Warfare setting behind for a more modern, more warfarey one, saying that it was a long decision, but not a hard one.

“Not a hard decision, but a long decision,” Rubin said. “We don’t get a chance when making a game to think about the next one until we are done actually making that first game. When we finished Modern Warfare 3, we had this big brainstorming session that lasted for weeks. Everybody gets to come up with ideas of what we want to do, not just what game we want to do, but moments in games.

“We all really knew we wanted to continue making Call of Duty. We could have done something else, but we wanted to make Call of Duty, and we wanted to create a new universe, or a new story at least. We wanted new characters and new experiences.

“The easy thing would have been – as we had finished the arc of Modern Warfare 1, 2 and 3 – to start a new arc within that same universe. That was the first step. But due to a lot of the changes we wanted to make with this new world, it really dictated out that we needed to make something that wasn’t Modern Warfare.”

Call of Duty: Ghosts is coming to PC, Ps3 and Xbox 360 on November 5 – and is also headed to next-gen consoles – even though its new engine isn’t entirely next-gen. Or new. But it does have a dog!

And while the decision to skip Modern Warfare was a long one for Infinity ward, I’m sure for many of you the decision to skip Ghosts won’t be long or hard.

Ha ha Geoff. For me, having skipped both MW3 and BO2, the decision criteria is still the same – Do you have ranked dedicated servers for PC, complete with proper working server browser. Yes? Okay – let’s talk.

I thought I’m the only one that rants on about dedicated servers with a server browser. I couldn’t agree with you more. I would give you 100 upvotes, but alas I can only give one. Hereyago.

”proper”…? Could never understand those who believe COD is for kids with lower IQs…I’ve got mates that are doctors, lawyers and chartered accountants that enjoy a good blast up on COD…Or you perhaps trying to fit in with the crowd here on LG…?

Doctors love charging you more for something simple. Lawyers are pure evil. Chartered accountants like doing repetitive things. Conclusion: they have something in common with CoD 😛

We don’t hate CoD, we’re only playing with the stereotypes, just say that Bioshock is for filthy hippie art students who need something to do between serving fries & everything will be ok 😀

Love Infinity Ward’s work but it’s gonna be tough to take on the new Battlefield which looks epic to say the least… They really gonna have to pull out all the stops…

So to summarise, after making CoDMW1-3 they spent weeks brainstorming & came up with CodGhost. Brainstorming in a teacup perhaps?

95% of the brainstorming was probably spent trying to decide if they were going to be able to get away with again. Ultimately compromise was reached when some bright spark (on the fast track to becoming CEO) said “HEY! instead of calling it modern warfare 4, lets call it something else. It can be exactly the same as the other games and even use the same engine but if the name is different it has to be different. Oh and let’s add a dog, dogs are cool.”

I think someone was playing DayZ in the office. After waiting for almost a year for the ill fated dog update he pitched the idea for dogs in CoD 😛

Let’s hope the sun is setting for the COD franchise. As we can see, its only little girls that play it anyway. That’s what the header means right?
