Skyrim Grandma is taking a break from streaming thanks to relentless internet armchair critics

Gaming has no shortage of personalities who keep the torch alive for many many games, but there’s no streamer more wholesome than Skyrim Grandma. Known as Shirley Curry to friends and family, Skyrim Grandma is a regular in the Elder Scrolls streaming community and has a love for the game that few can match.

At 82 years of age, she’s a vibrant and lovely person who exudes the type of positivity that people need in this, the crappiest of timelines. Naturally, the jackass side of the internet has descended on her channel because they’re desperate for attention. In a video posted earlier this month and spotted by PCGamesN, Curry detailed how she was stepping back from publically streaming due to armchair critics having a go at how she chooses to play the game and questioning her fandom. “My health isn’t very good. My blood pressure is going insane,” Curry said in the vlog.

My stress level is way too high. And I’m going to have to take control of it. Some of the comments are stressing me out way too much.

Curry explained how she has to constantly deal with commenters having a go at her decision to gasp enjoy Skyrim, as she delves into the role-playing side of the game instead of scrutinising every single aspect of her character build and use that information to create an almighty Dragonborn god who can steamroll through the experience in less time than it takes to heat up a cup of tea.

That, combined with generally patronising comments and your run of the mill internet asshole has resulted in a two-week sabbatical from YouTube as she looks to reset and take control of her channel when she returns to a less stressful streaming schedule. “Any comments I see like that are going to be deleted,” Curry explained.

I don’t have to be told about what games to play, and describe to me what the games are like. I look at all the games. I’m a gamer, and if I wanted to play them I would be playing them. And when I tell somebody ‘no,’ that’s a simple answer. Easily understood. You don’t need to come back with ‘Why?’ Because I don’t have to explain myself. And when I do nobody seems to get it anyway.

I”m not enjoying recording any more at all. It’s no longer fun. I feel like I’m under a microscope all the time. I have much more fun and I play much better when I’m just playing by myself. It puts a lot of pressure on me, and any gamer when people are watching them play, especially when they nit-pick everything. I’m trying to get my health under control. I’m not trying to be cranky.

There’s an art to being helpful and being an arrogant know-it-all, and that’s something I’ve experienced often with my own video work. For some reason, there’s a chunk of the internet that gets their panties into a knot if you don’t broadcast a godly display of S-rank prowess in a game and take zero hits while playing on Nightmare-mode difficulty. I cannot imagine a life sadder than that of an individual who gets upset over people enjoying video games and has to scream into the comments section about it.

As for Curry, she still has her fans and a place in the next Elder Scrolls game thanks to a successful petition which will immortalise her within the upcoming sequel.

Quick update: While Curry has tweeted that the annoying comments made on her YouTube don’t number in the millions and millions as what some other outlets have reported, I’m not changing anything with this story and leaving it as is because the information above is still accurate according to her vlog. I refrained from mentioning these armchair comments coming from a mass legion of jerks when I originally wrote this post and I’m sticking to that.

I still think the people responsible for giving Curry such stress, are jerks though. Jerks who can hopefully learn a lesson or two from this whole brouhaha.

Really, pick on a granny that actually just plays a game for the fun and enjoyment of it. Seriously people need to chill the fuck out and let people enjoy what they do the way they do it.

Bunch of selfish pricks who can’t let somebody else enjoy something and drag them down to their pit of despair really ticks me off.

Wow, the nostalgia of watching her playing and how much fun she’s having, I just might reinstall Skyrim tonight. If people are planning on starting a fund to gift her Elder Scrolls 6 I’ll happily chip in.

    That’s just sad.
Something unique and beautiful destroyed by entitlement.
I don’t believe in censoring of comments, but there has to be a line. I’ve been consuming far more YouTube content lately for obvious reasons, and it sickens me at how many comments and even fellow content creators feel the need to crap on others, simply because they’re “doing it wrong”.

If you’re looking for YouTube content and enjoy games journalism, check out TheQuartering. Unlike these “journalists,” TheQuartering checks the source, like Skyrim Grandma’s Twitter, where she cited her quite positive experience on YouTube and disavowed these smear pieces aimed at her target audience, gamers.

        Dude seriously.
Its like you didn’t even read my damn comment before jumping on your little horse and smearing your opinion in my face. You’re like the Wish ads on Facebook.

Should the contents of this article prove incorrect, knowing the staff of this site there will probably be an update correcting this.
People make mistakes, and in the cut throat field of journalism sometimes you get the wrong data.

Read my comment. You fall exactly into the category of scum who belittle one content creator to push the agenda of another.

It’s… not an opinion though? This is a smear piece made with incomplete information and filtered through the writer’s bias (which of course we all have, but this one sucks). You can’t argue it’s not when the writer uses emotionally charged phrases like “the jackass side of the internet has descended on her channel because they’re desperate for attention,” assuming both numbers and motive. This is basically an opinion piece at this point, and should be treated as such.

I’m not the one with bad opinions; Darryn Bonthuys is. Glad I used my adblock for this pathetic site.

            Again. Your opinion.

Please see yourself out the door you little hypocrite.
Your head is so far up your own ass you don’t seem to see that your commentary makes you exactly one of those jackasses.

If you do not enjoy the content, stay off the site, and keep your bias to yourself.

I’ll go through her Twitter when I get a chance today, to see how these comments now differ from her Youtube videos where I pulled my info from originally, and see what needs to be amended in the article.

And on that note, not a chance will I allow anything from The Quartering on this site. I am genuinely not a fan of his content and how he farms outrage for clicks while also attacking writers constantly just because he fails to understand sarcasm.

Case and point to my comment below: “Should the contents of this article prove incorrect, knowing the staff of this site there will probably be an update correcting this.”

What was the term, Journalistic integrity? Thanks for proving me right D.

lol, thanks man. I did a small update at the bottom of the post, but TLDR I’m leaving the story as is. I think it’s accurate, and still gets the message across.

“I cannot imagine a life sadder than that of an individual who gets upset over people enjoying video games and has to scream into the comments section about it.”

That is a pretty big oof, as it pretty much describes every single person getting their gender-neutral panties in a knot about some political issue that some computer game is offending them over.

I don’t disagree entirely with that. I can’t say if the series was warrented, but she clearly had an audience willing to crowdfund her initiative so that’s fine for them and all the power to her audience. I wasn’t interested, i didn’t watch. Simple as that.

Then you had the screaming on the other side and yeeesh what a mess.

To be fair, it is quite frustrating to watch someone play a game and struggle with something trivial. My wife has gotten quite angry with me if I am playing a game she has finished and I struggle with something. Correct response for the people watching is to watch someone else.
Correct response for the person playing is to deliberately play badly to annoy said people.

Didn’t she come out saying that the “harrassment” is bullshit and called out people writing articles like this? She’s taking a break due to health reasons and apparently a bunch of idiots thought it would be cool to make it about harrassment… Stop writing lies about this grandma, stop shining a spotlight on her when she wants to take a break, stop trying to use her for easy clicks.. it’s disgusting
