Skyrim is the best game this generation

That’s according to an online poll by Amazon.co.uk (via MCV) that pitted this generation’s greatest games against each other in a tournament-styled beatdown. It bested current darling The Last of Us to claim the title of the best game of the generation.

Other games that made it through to the shortlist included Fallout 3, GTA 4, BioShock, Portal 2, Mass Effect 2, Super Mario Galaxy, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Batman: Arkham City, Far Cry 3, BioShock Infinite, The Walking Dead and Metal Gear Solid 4.

The Last of Us actually did really well, considering it was released on just one platform; Skyrim was available on 3 – so that could account for its win. Or perhaps it really is the very best game produced this generation, bugs, lifeless NPC’s and all.

What do you think? Agree, disagree? Is Bethesda’s buggy, but beautiful RPG the best game this generation?

Piece of shit overrated bug-ridden Sims simulator awful fighting mechanics game. And no, your PC mods for the game doesn’t count. The game had no soul.

    TLOU FTW!!

Ah yes, but I provide soul to games I play. I know, I know, games are played to provide that little bit of escapism, without effort from you.

And some of the side quests were just epic. What about getting drunk, waking up in a city you have never even been near, and then tracing your way steps the night before. A bit cliched, but some fun to be had.

For sure. I’m being a bit dramatic 😀
The fact that it was so full of bugs and felt quite lifeless and still it is voted the game of this generation just pisses me of. But I’m over that now 😀

I found the Xbox version, bought just after release, to be free of any game breaking bugs. I know your mileage may vary, but I found it thus.

It is lifeless, nothing you ever do matters. Sounds like married life 🙂

Um, my wife does not read this, right?

I borrowed the game and played it on the Xbox also and didn’t come across any bugs either, but only played about 7 hours and called it quits. My rage comes from the allegations against the PS3 version.

I have the xbox and ps3 versions. I’m not going to talk about the PS3 version because the state that game is in, is the reason why I now “retail boycott” any and all games from Bugthesda. But, if you invest a considerable time into the xbox version, it also becomes unstable due to a save file bug.

It’s a little rarer than the PS3 bug – or maybe xbox gamers didn’t finish skyrim or bailed out after only 20 to 30 hours, but my game went pear shaped on both versions. The xbox one is still playable, but it’s definitely more unstable now. One day, I’ll check for a patch, but for now, I only carry utter hatred in my heart for those bugthesda fuckers.
IF there was one company that almost got me to change my stance on software piracy it’s Bugthesda. “Yes two wrongs don’t make a right” but these bastards won’t get a cent from me ever again.

Yeah it is shocking in which state the game was released and what high scores it got. The 10/10 from the wookie still traumatizes me to this day and any review or recommendation from him I handle like the plague 🙂

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            August 6, 2013 at 12:01

lol the poor Wookie was flung into an oil-filled pan (because of that review), and it went even weirder after Dragon’s Dogma.
But yeah, that 10/10 left me shell-shocked. :0 I guess that’s the most talked about LG review of all time.

Maybe if I never played any other Elder Scrolls games, Baldur’s Gate, The Witcher, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age 1, Torment, Fallout or any game made on any platform except my trusty ZX Spectrum, I’d give Skyrim a 9/10.

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            August 6, 2013 at 12:06

I’d give it a 6/10 if I never played anything other than Skyrim, and that’s being generous.

What makes it stand out on PC though is the mods, and I’ll admit, the mods for this game is impressive – but here’s my problem with that, users create better content than the turd-flinging monkeys at Bethesda.

          • Spathi

            August 6, 2013 at 12:11

Exactly. It doesn’t make the PC version better. It makes it possible to disguise the turd as a Flake. I hope you get this mental image each time you eat a Flake now. Sorry, someone must suffer with me…

So tell me Jimmy. What would Bethesda have to do, to convince you do spend money on their games again? Because remember, nobody is beyond redemption.

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            August 6, 2013 at 23:43

But what about serial killers, sociopaths or psychopaths? Surely, they’re incapable of redemption 😛

For me personally, I’d like Bethesda to create an Elder Scrolls game where your actions and choices actually mattered in the game world. Where actions have repercussions rather than just independent occurrences in a soulless, lifeless world – populated by mannequins from the uncanny valley.

For instance, a quest requires you to kill a king. If you carry out this single act of regicide, you become a feared pariah. But the knock-on effect is that you’re no longer welcome in the Mages guild. Or if you choose to spare the king, down the line, it might emerge that your action led to the destruction of a village and the death of your wife, child or favourite blacksmith (because the King decided to wage a war). etc. etc.
At this stage, I don’t think they can redeem themselves. I’ll see what they do next gen, but I’m not holding my breath.

Skyrim was the first ever Bethesda game I ever finished, I really enjoyed it as its so easy to get lost in the world and its lore, yes there were a few bugs but nothing worth writing home about.I am still amazed that a game so huge was only 4.1 GB in size.

I never played gothic. I actually played Daggerfall. Awesome game. Morrowind was also a great game. Oblivion was entertaining but not a good game. Skyrim continued with that trend.

            August 6, 2013 at 12:04

The gothic games were very cool, very buggy though, but once you got it working, the scale of it was insane, not to mention, unlike Elder scrolls where your actions matter little, in the Gothic games, you had to weigh up diplomacy. It’s kind of sad that the Gothic games are so underrated and underappreciated, while the Elder Crap gets all the accolades.

Which leaves me to think that Amazon users are on crack. I can name 3 games worthy of this title, and it doesn’t involve Bugthesda’s junk.

into it – probably somewhere around 450 +. That said, I just ordered the
Dark Souls Limited Ed. (yeah, pretty late I know) and will be giving it
a serious go. We’ve still got GTAV and Rome II (if that counts) to go, then we should be calling winners.

If I PERSONALLY would have to choose only one, it would be Dark Souls, this game really redefined gaming as a whole for me. Skyrim is amazing but seriously, the combat sucks so much, and I might get a lot of hate for this but it is just a very very polished Oblivion

But it is so much easier as to try and explain the differences to you…

In short, The Elder Scrolls games fighting lacks depth. After 10 minutes, you’ve seen what is to be seen in the fighting department. There is no real skill involved. Dark Souls/ Demon’s Souls on the other hand, your character level doesn’t matter all that much (if at all), it is you as a person that “levels” by mastering the combat.

So this is the experience that I had with Skyrim’s combat. many people tend to go more magic based, myself included, as where skyrim’s combat fell apart was the melee part of. most melee attacks lack any sort of impact and the hit detection is really off. it’s button mashing at best and the weapon just looks like you’re flailing it in the air. I just keep hitting attack, back off, magic, go in to attack, repeat. ranged is much more fun. Dark Souls made me realize that Skyrim’s combat lacked any sort of depth at all. Not to say it’s downright horrible, but it’s not that good imo, most people find it equally as bad. but the other aspects of the game makes up for it ten folds

        August 6, 2013 at 08:57

Combat in Skyrim is really basic & far easier compared to Dark Souls. Even leveled up a single basic enemy in Dark Souls can kill you if you’re careless, so every fight seems like a challenge & requires some skill, care & patience. After a while in Skyrim I was resorting to sneaking & backstabbing everyone, because I knew I could win every fight & it was faster.

And there’s absolutely no comparison to the challenge provided by a Dark Souls dragon compared to a Skyrim dragon.

Yeah, but Dark Souls, that is that hideously difficult game right? See, with Skyrim you never feel overwhelmed in combat. You are challenged, but not so much so that you feel like you want to fling your controller at the wall.

True, it is very difficult, and I wouldn’t want Skyrim to have quite as much difficulty because for a big game like this it would get very frustrating very quickly.

I just found Skyrim combat to get very predictable after leveling up a few times & the initial challenge disappeared, whereas with Dark Souls that challenge is always there. I think the big difference is that Dark Souls combat is more skill-based compared to Skyrim’s level-based approach.

Indeed, Mass Effect really took Story Telling to a new level too, I’m one of the few people that doesn’t get all agro by the ending of 3. All in All, Mass Effect was a huge player this gen

I agree with you about ME3 ending. If you read lot of sci-fi books it was predictable, no real surprise there.

Looking forward to it. But what character to play? Hmmm

I hear a lot of hate against Skyrim. Yet most people I know that play games now rage on Skyrim, YET, they put in more than 100 hours on the game. Feeling of betrayal?

I really, really, enjoyed it, but best game? Hardly. Most entertaining? possibly, judging by the amount of time I spent on it in a one month period. WAAAAYYY more than most other games in a short time span.

Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect were both better, but had perhaps less mass appeal than Skyirm. In my ever so humble opinion.

Skyrim is good, but it’s not the best. It looks really amazing – I stopped to look at the scenery on more than one occasion & even took screenshots to show people at work, it has some good stories in the various quest lines, but the actual gameplay was pretty boring after a while to be honest.

I actually agree with that. Portal 2 was one amazing experience. It was an almost perfect game, from the excellent story and writing (accompanied by great voice acting), to perfect game mechanics and perfect pacing.

Not saying that ME2 was bad, I loved that too (although I enjoyed ME1 more), but Portal 2 was something really special.

The ME trilogy trumps Portal’s story, but ME2 only was pretty meh (the story) for myself. I think I expected too much after ME1’s story, which was so incredibly awesome!

Twak! This survey is flawed as people who answer consider recent games. If a game was excellent, but they are bored with it now, then they will nog consider it. And also, what do they consider as “This Generation”?
There are some truly classic games that come to mind that are not featured.

Does anyone know where I can get parts for cheap instead of having to go through the likes of Esquire or one of those distributors?

I enjoyed Fallout 3 more than i did Skyrim.
And for this year, my favourite, so far is definitely Far Cry 3.

xbox360. Didn’t have too many issues until I got to a point in the thieves guild quests, where I couldn’t continue. And because I got sidetracked for hours inbetween the two quests, I no longer had a save I could go back to. Was not happy. I knew something looked wrong with beautyfull. Oh well, luckily I don’t write for a living.

The game is massive. You can really do what you want. After 100 hours of play, you will not have seen and done everything.

For me it is hard to decide between ME1,2,3. All where amazingly emotionally engaging. The first had the great exploration, the 2nd was probably the most polished and the third gave us the great multiplayer option. I’ve now lost count with the number of playthroughs with about 1.5k MP matches.

With Skyrim I am busy with my 3rd playthrough, but apart from the exploration the game feels flat.

I am also surprised that Minecraft did not make the shortlist.

Truth be told, hearing it being the game of this generation explains a lot about what happened to our generation. If it isn’t for the modding community, I would say Skyrim wouldn’t ever hit the game of the year award. Community patches fixing things that shouldn’t have existed in the first place. I would say it would’ve been more logical to go from skyrim to oblivion in gameplay, story and overall game configuration mechanics. Skyrim completely missed the whole “Game” aspect.

Yeah there is some of it I like, but it is the small things that hindered the gameplay to a level where players don’t actually play the game, but rather try to avoid areas of the game that appear to be problematic, not sure about the console version, but the pc version was extremely unstable at times. Quests not updating, AI not responding, game engine resources not loading like they should, considering that the game was in development since the release of oblivion, one would expect that they would’ve fixed things like, HDR, eye adaptation, the saturation, gameplay mechanics like auto aiming archery, sneak ability making the player ridiculously powerful, limited display settings, the list goes on.

Most of the above mentioned wasn’t ever an issue in oblivion, or previous games in the franchise. As much as I like the franchise, Bethesda fell very short with skyrim. Patches and DLCs didn’t make things any better, the list got even longer when more of their “official content” was introduced. I feel that Skyrim wasn’t really aimed at the folks that has been with the franchise but rather to people that might’ve never played any elder scrolls game before, the only semi-cool aspect of skyrim is the low quality dynamic shadows.

Excuse the essay. XD Enjoy your day.
