According to Bethesda there’s a minimal difference in graphical fidelity between the console and PC versions of their insanely anticipated RPG follow up, Skyrim.
Don’t feel let down though, PC gamers – Skyrim won’t be a dumbed down, horribly textured console port…promise!
"I’d say it scales up in all the ways you’d expect," said Bethesda’s Todd Howard to journalists previewing the game. "All of our art’s really high-res. There are little things we do with all of our games on PC and the PC texture sizes are going to be as big as you can make them and you can pump the resolution up obviously."
"But most of that… What we want at the end of the day is that the game looks the same. The benefit you get is when you’re playing a PC game you’re playing this far away [demonstrating a short distance], when you’re at home on your console you’re usually sitting about six feet away so the game looks the same." Ahh, sneaky! The PC version will look and run better, provided you have the requisite hardware, but those couch-potato console gamers will never know their version is inferior because they’re short-sighted.
I’ll be honest saying I’m pretty torn as to which version to get; I’m generally one of those couch-bound gamers, happily sacrificing visuals for the sake of comfort, but I’ve played through the previous Elder Scrolls games on PC and I don’t really want to break that tradition. Plus, the PC version will have something its console cousins won’t – mods. I remember the effect after-market mods had on Oblivion – increasing texture quality along with performance, as well as adding new quests, items and all sorts of other wonderful things missing from the game.
Actually yeah..I guess that’s my mind made up. Which version do you plan on getting?
