I was excited to see everything at rAge – what surprised me though, was how incredible the indie section was. I was seriously impressed. The 15 games featured showed more creativity than some of the entire AAA stands. Unfortunately, people had to share computers, so not all the games were available all the time – I missed out on a bunch of them. Big thanks to the guys at MakeGamesSA for making this possible!

We’ll actually be looking at some of the games in more detail later on – I got to speak to the developers who were there and I’m really excited about what’s going on in the local scene. In the meantime though, here are the games that were at rAge. I’m doing it in alphabetical order to avoid any accusations of favoritism.

A Day in the Woods

There was a queue for this cute puzzler the WHOLE DAY! It looks so cool, and certainly deserved the attention. You can already pick up a copy of A Day in the Wood through their website. Definitely something different:

Bear Chuck

Bear Chuck is a couch versus game that combines puzzling with action. While the focus so far has been on mechanical prototyping rather than graphics, the game still looks like a lot of fun and certainly got a lot of people interested at rAge. Brought to you by Steven Tu, you can download the latest build (for Windows) and give it a bash if you didn’t get a chance to play it at rAge. Check it out:

Blazin’ Aces

I’ll be honest, I didn’t get to play with this one. From Red Dot Lab, Blazin’ Aces is a retro aerial dogfighting game that will be cross platform. It’s coming to PC, Mac, Android and iOS – you can check out their website here.

Broforce

Okay, bring on the accusations of favoritism – we have told you a lot about Broforce. First, Darryn chatted to the guys from Free Lives, as well as a couple updates regarding Steam Greenlight. That said, Broforce is an indie game that seriously deserves the attention – it’s fantastic! Filled with all your Contra love and tons of violence, you need to take a closer look at what Free Lives have created.

Cadence

Cadence is a musical puzzle game. By linking nodes, you create an infinite melodic loop. Developed by Made with Monster Love, Cadence was originally created during the game jam Ludum Dare 26 and was called Synesthesis. It is in active development for iPad, PC and Mac. Check out the website – you can also download the game.

Death Lazer

Unfortunately, this was another one I didn’t manage to get any hands on time with. It looks quite cool, though. a top-down shooter that lets you challenge someone to a deathmatch in multiplayer, or go up against AI to improve your skill. Death Lazer doesn’t take itself too seriously – you’ve gotta have fun while enjoying an old school deathmatch! Check out Death Lazer online where you can download the game.

Death Smashers

More from the brilliant guys at Free Lives, Death Smashers is the result of 7DFPS, a game jam where developers must make an FPS in seven days. With the fantastic tag line “Kill demons with rocket chainsaws” what could possibly go wrong? I play this for a bit, but my FPS issues were not built for games like these. check out the gameplay video, or just go to their site and download the game.

Desktop Dungeons

The last time I played Desktop Dungeons was when it was in Alpha. I loved that game. Now, the game seems to be nearing completion – at least, that’s how it looked at rAge. This rogue-like dungeon crawler has a lot to offer now – beautiful artwork, an abundance of silly puns, town growth and leveling as well as the cool crawling mechanics that made it so much fun to begin with. If you haven’t checked out Desktop Dungeons by now, you’re seriously missing out. Go to their site and try it out!

Pixel Boy

Pixel Boy was one of my favorite games on show at rAge. It has a bit of everything – part RPG, part action-shooter, this top-down self-aware rogue dungeon crawler is seriously intense. I particularly enjoyed chatting to the developers, a two man team who only actually met in person a couple days before rAge. That’s right, this game was built almost entirely through the use of Google Hangouts for communication. The result? A fantastic game! They’re on Steam Greenlight, so go on over and give your support!

Silhouette

I was intrigued by Silhouette – a two person game where one plays as a victim trying to escape from a mansion while the other player is a killer. Set in a dark, black and white environment, the game certainly is eerie. Unfortunately, the setup at rAge was not conducive to gameplay, and the developers were not on hand to explain the game or controls. You can still play the game online if you are so inclined – definitely a cool concept.

System Crash

System Crash is a cyberpunk Collectible Card Game for PC, Mac and Linux. While I didn’t get any hands on time with the game, it certainly looked pretty cool. The Demo and full game are available on their website.

Toxic Bunny

What is Toxic Bunny? Well, the guys from Celestial describe it as:

Toxic Bunny is what would happen if the Looney Toons & Monty Python were heavily armed and thrown into a blender with the best (and worst) movies of the 90’s and turned the results into a retro platform game.

Need I say more? In fact, Toxic Bunny HD is now looking for support on Steam Greenlight. You know you want to vote for this off the wall game. It’s hilarious and fun – you can buy it now on their site.

Viscera Cleanup Detail

After the alien invasion was staved off through some amazing feats of courage, this place is a mess! As a janitor, it’s your job to clean up the facility. Yup, that’s Viscera Cleanup Detail. It may be a game about mopping up a mess, but it’s seriously hilarious – especially when you realize you’re leaving bloody footprints everywhere! The game has already been Greenlit, but you can still support their game. I certainly enjoyed it at rAge.

Wang Commander

Ah, Wang Commander, a game so hilarious you have to love it. What is it? An abstract penis simulator. Yup, that’s right. After a bit of waiting, I got some hands on time with the game. The controls aren’t spot on, but the concept is interesting. I particularly like that the developer designed it for people to share one gamepad – that’s one way of overcoming any intimacy problems you might have, share a gamepad with a stranger at rAge! Hosting a party? Try out the playable prototype with friends.

zX Hyperblast

zx Hyperblast is hard. No, really – it’s insanely difficult. That doesn’t make it any less awesome, though. In fact, it’s a true homage to retro gaming – you fly your ship through this incredible arcade shooter. But don’t believe me – watch the video below. Then, go vote for the game on Steam Greenlight!

It’s ironic how the least graphics intensive games are released predominantly on the platform that produces the best graphics.

True. But don’t forget the PC, it isn’t only the PS4 that supports indies! 😉

If Brian was not injured and I had to consume a springbokkie after each try, I would have become a Silhouette in a dark ally.

So i’ve had a proper look now, and can say that there’s just 1 game there that I’ll be buying. A Day in the Woods. Looks like you’ll seriously have to use your head for that. I’d even get my son to play it 😀

I must be a rare breed then, none of those appeal to me.

Pixelboy looks slick and exciting, yet I’ve no inclination to try it. Desktop Dungeons – I’d rather just load up my Baldurs Gate games or Planescape Torment again and go through those epics. Different I know, but that’s just me. Really, none of the others even caught my interest.

It really is just me isn’t it? I’m the crazy one here?

If you’re into puzzlers, Cadence may scratch an itch, it’s still in early dev but the prototype that is currently out will give you a good idea of what it’s about.
