If you’ve turned your PS3 on in the last few hours, you may have noticed that there’s a brand new firmware update available for your black glory box. It’s made no obviously changes to the XMB, so what changes has the large number heralded?
The big thing, really, is that it’s preparing your PS3 to be able to run 3D games – something that maybe…maybe 1% of you will be able to do. Other changes are a lot more subtle.
You’ll notice that trophies are now able to be managed, and sorted. According to the Playstation Blog :
- Trophy enhancements — Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]
- Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
- Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
- Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)
That’s not all though. Apparently the version of flash used in the built in browser has been updated – so if you’ve been browsing on your PS3 and come across videos that won’t play, this may be the update you’ve been waiting for.
The Blu-Ray stack has also been updated, so certain region free discs that had problematic playback have been fixed. so not too much has been added – but at least this update hasn’t removed anything. there are also a few new audio options for BD audio if you look hard enough.
Another unannounced feature is PC remote play. While it’s obvious what this is, details of how to use it are bit of a mystery at the moment.
If you’re still holding out for custom firmware from GeoHot – you’re probably going to have to hold out quite a bit longer, as there’s been no word from him in ages. do you really want to save OtherOS that badly?

What a useless update i read some where that it updated the flash player for u youtube and other flash player watchers as well

Well i turned on my PS3 no FW update in sight still on 3.21.. weird really and the PS3 tells me my firmware is up to date as well :blink:

WHat a bullshit update. I remember on the last one the PlayStation website update page wasn’t working for a couple hours after the update was confirmed. PlayStation really needs to sort themselves out.

I think that when you stop throwing your hissy fit, you will find that all Hotz did was find a security flaw in the PS3. It’s Sony who decided it was too difficult to fix and culled OtherOS. Calling him stupid says more about you than him.
