Star Lord

Let’s be honest here: The coolest hero of the year is undoubtedly Star Lord, who happens to be a cross between the swagger of Han Solo, the dance moves of Michael Jackson and the badass skills of Indiana Jones. As far as heroes go, his signature look also happens to be quite easy to replicate. Sort of. And with various events coming up that the cosplay community is dying to take part in, you can bet that everybody wants to be a Star Lord this year.

First up, let’s check out the costume. In the film, Peter Quill has three distinct looks. The first one is his trench-coat outfit from the beginning of the film:

Star Lord (2)

Star Lord (3)

Later on, he puts on a shorter jacket which carries him through most of Knowhere:

Star Lord (4)

Star Lord (5)

And then lastly, he ties it all up with a Ravager uniform:

Star Lord (9)

Each jacket has a distinctive look, filled with small details and markings, as well as general wear and tear, although the trench and second act jackets have a similar base design. Next up, is the shirt. The most common shirt used so far is a long sleeve Hanes T-shirt, as it matches colour. Kind of. The shirt also has other mesh details and a collar, although at this stage, this will most likely be the least pursued item on the list, with most folks opting for anything that matches the costume thereabouts.

Right now, you can find replicas on eBay. They aren’t exactly fantastic, but they do the job. Here’s a link for the longer jacket, as well as the shorter jacket to give you an idea on pricing. Also don’t forget, if you’re importing these locally, you’re going to pay out of infinity stone a hefty amount in customs and taxes. It might be better to find a local tailor to craft you something like this, and using foam to add the various embellishments to the finished jacket.

The pants however, are a monster in the design and details department. They’ve got waxed cotton and canvas interior panels, corduroy panels and non-functional zippers. There also controls for foot-rockets mounted on the outside of the knee, leather padding on the hips and slots to place holsters for the quad blasters. In other words, these pants are an absolute beast of custom design and sewing.

They can be replicated, but for a Star Lord in a hurry, you might be better off going with some biker pants. Make certain that they’re tight however. They need to show your legs off, and here’s the closest match that I’ve found so far. The boots aren’t as difficult to source, but they’re going to present a challenge anyway. And they aren’t really boots at all.

Star Lord (1)

What Quill is wearing, are a pair of Sketchers Diameter shoes, with custom leather spats added on top of them. Basic spats aren’t too hard to find, and you can hit an equestrian shop to stock up, or eBay. The shoes might be harder to source, but you can use the Sketchers brand as a template to find something else that resembles it roughly.

Star Lord (12)

To really complete the look however, you’re going to need to add some plating to the outside soles of the spats, where boot rockets can sit.

Star Lord (13)

Right, that’s the clothing sorted. let’s get down to props.

Star Lord (14)

The most iconic part of the Star Lord gear, is easily his space helmet. It’s a very cool piece of kit, and various prop forums have been working to replicate it. You can find them online, but here’s the rub: It ain’t going to be cheap. You’re looking at a starting price of at least $250 for one of these helmets, and that still requires clean-up work, sanding, inserting lenses and adding some LEDs to the eyes. Don’t forget padding the helmet either, if you want it to sit on your noggin properly. So how do you make one for yourself then? An official adult mask is available, but it only covers the front of your face.

Helagak on The Replica Forums has been putting in a ton of work on the Pepakura side. If you’re unfamiliar with Pepakura, then the quick explanation is that you can use that program to create some kickass cosplay pieces, with paper prints that can be constructed into the final product, or the more popular foam files that walk a line between quick builds and decent replica. So credit where credit is due, here are some links for the helmet, to get you started:

You’ll need to download the Pepakura viewer for some of these files, which is free and quite small actually. I also highly recommend reading a tutorial or two, on using it properly. It’ll take some work, but creating your own Star Lord helmet is way better than trying to resize your face for the kids version of front-only mask at Toys R Us.

On the gun side however, acquiring quad blasters is much, much easier. NERF has tie-n merchandise with the film, and offer replicas of the guns that shoot foam darts, not concussive energy blasts. So a lot safer then. They’re easy enough to buy, and you can take the base model and paint it to look more like the film version. Easy-peasy, cheaper and quicker than chips.

Star Lord (15)

Of course, if you’re looking for that extra touch of realism, you can always 3D print the guns, or construct them from MDF.

The last bit of kit for today, is the walkman that contains the Awesome Mix. If you’re gunning for a spot-on piece of authentic cosplay gear, this is where you could lay down quite a bit of cash. That’s a Sony TPS-L2, which even before the film was a sought-after piece of equipment by audiophiles. Right now, you can pick one up on eBay, for around an easy $200-$500. Yeesh.

Sony TPS-L2

Alternatively, the third-generation Sony WM-3 is a cheaper walkman from that era, that looks the part and is far, far more affordable. Or you can source the headset, which can be found at pretty much Pick ‘n Pay and Click stores, dye the foam and use a cellphone instead. Buy the album kids! There are faux walkman cases on the way for iPhones, but they’re still going to be a while.

And that’s just a quick look at the costume, guys. For something so simple, it has a lot of thought that went into it. And we haven’t even touched on jet-boots or the various belts, buckles, gloves and the sling-bag yet. Which is a monster of an article for another day.

I would chainsaw Geoff in half to do a costume like that. Carmine the third is by far my favourite Gears character.

Sounds complicated. You could just dress like an emperor instead – all you need is a jean pant, a striped polo shirt with – and this is important – the collar up, some khaki socks & a pair of hang-ten flip flops.

interesting fact, they make the toy guns orange so that it doesn’t look to much like the real thing, seeing how cops in America already put extra iron in your diet just for wearing a hoodie.

I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that one gun manufacturer makes his guns orange so they can be concealed as toy guns. Thus invalidating the point entirely.

I know a company in Cape Town that has Leather in a very similar shade to the jackets. It’s pricey though, R300+/sqm. And you’ll need about 4-6 sqm to make the trench style….

Comic book Star Lord may be even easier to copy, and give you a bit more cred with the cosplayers. But I guess movie Star Lord is more easily recognised so either way it’s a win. 😀
