Microsoft has been saying it for ages and so have the technical analysts with decent Internet lines. Now Sony are possibly also agreeing.
Ray Maguire of Sony UK believes that in 10 years 90% of game sales will be totally online, and not only for gaming but for media in general. Music is already leading the way in the States thanks to iTunes and friends and netflix is starting to offer the movies in a big way.
From my personal experience of the COD 4 Beta I can say that I would much rather not have to get off my lazy …. to change discs and would rather just choose the next game I want to play…
Will it take off? Only if the rest of the worlds Internet catches up with the US and Asia.

Although I’m a big fan of downloadable content, I’m not sure this can even be contemplated at the moment. Even people in decidedly first world countries complain about throttled bandwidth, the high cost of bandwidth and capping. South Africa is no orphan when it comes to restrictive internet access. I also think it’s major jump downloading a couple of MP3’s from iTunes to downloading 8GB games. This will also kill the trading of games, which lets face it, is often the only way less affluent gamers are able to get their juice. When it comes to movies and or games, until it’s quicker and a lot cheaper to download than running down to the store and renting a movie or buying a game, I’m not going to bite.

honestly, maybe things will change in 10 years time, but to me, I sure hope that things don’t start moving to the dl crap.
hell, as things stand right now, i get a little sick when I download anything bigger then 100 mb’s and game patch’s generally own my cap to pieces.
once internet reaches the point when it’s like R100 for the line and R10 per cap, then I can understand because it would most likely cost more for the petrol to drive down to the shops then the cap 😀
still, games are getting bigger and bigger, so now we gonna have to race the fact that in 10 years time games will be as big as 100 gig’s or so (look at the leap from games in 1998 to now, unreal tournament was 800 odd megs, unreal tournament 3 is like 9 gig’s,)
so bandwidth better come down or this is all a big pipe dream

There is still something to be said for being able to hold the physical item in your paws, humans as a race are pack rats and horders, they like to collect and they like the physical nature of “possesions” even know I would much rather mission out and get GT5p on BD than download it off the store!
