Here’s a bit of surprising news; mere days after announcing that PlayStation All-Stars developer SuperBot was hit with layoffs, word comes that Sony has ended its working relationship with the studio. All further updates and DLC for the title will be done in-house, by Sony Santa Monica.

"Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm that the working agreement with developer SuperBot Entertainment has amicably ended. We have had a positive working relationship with this talented studio, and wish them the best of success in their next endeavor. PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale and the title’s forthcoming DLC releases will continue to be fully supported by Santa Monica Studio," a Sony representative told Kotaku.

That seems like an oddly amicable split. Superbot president David Yang also seemed a little too cheerful about the separation.

“SuperBot Entertainment can confirm that the relationship with SCEA has ended on good terms. We are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work on with Sony on Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, and are extremely proud of the work we have done,” he said.

SuperBot Entertainment will continue working on projects that reflect our passion for games and our commitment to creating award winning titles. We are very excited about beginning the next chapter of our future and invite all of our fans and supporters to follow our journey.”

PlayStation All-Stars wasn’t a terrible game, though it perhaps got a little too close to the Smash Bros formula it tried so desperately to emulate. Copying Nintendo’s ideas is pretty easy – but pulling them off? that’s an entirely different matter.

PlayStation All Stars is available for the PS3 and PlayStation Vita – but has pretty much been a wash, failing to reach half a million units on both platforms combined. It’s worth playing though, and the good news is that its lack of retail success means we might soon see it as a free title on PlayStation Plus.
