One of Sony’s future handhelds will merge the worlds of handheld consoles, e-book readers and netbooks, says the Wall Street Journal.

"Sony is developing a portable device that shares characteristics of handheld game machines, e-book readers and netbook computers, according to people familiar with the matter," said the prolific newspaper – but they’ve not said whether or not it will be the successor to the PSP, or a new device entirely.

According to the WSJ,  Sony and Nintendo are also in talks with  NTT DoCoMo, a Japanese mobile carrier about including 3G connectivity in gaming handhelds.

"Videogame makers know that in order for portable game machines to take the next step forward, they need wireless communication," NTT DoCoMo president Ryuji Yamada told the paper. "We are discussing this with various players."

Rumours have abounded about the PSP2, which many were upset wasn’t unveiled at this year’s E3. the buzz is that it’s expected to be an iPhone killer, with two cameras, a touch screen and sporting a a quad core PowerVR graphics chip. That we’ll have to see.

As for this ambitious handheld device? One that that shares characteristics of handheld game machines, e-book readers and netbook computers? So Sony are making the iPad, then?

They already have an e-book reader that’s failing and with the iPad around selling so well, I don’t see why not

I always say, “more competition for Apple is definitely a good thing”. Not only is it pushing companies like Sony and Apple to develop some interesting hardware, but it also means decent prices for us consumers.

The Ipad stole the thunder from the Kindle and Sony’s e-book reader, which is a shame because both readers are actually very good at what they do.
