5 years on, and the PlayStation 3 is finally at a point where it has the momentum to overtake the Xbox 360 as the global (read: US) console of choice. Much of the reason it’s lagging behind somewhat is it ridiculously expensive launch price (you can work 2 jobs, go on!) and the fact that it launched a full year after the Xbox 360.

That disparity in market availability isn’t something Sony seems keen to repeat.

"I think we would consider it undesirable to be significantly later than the competition [with the next PlayStation]," PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan told Eurogamer.

We already know that Nintendo’s releasing its “next generation” console, the Wii U next year There are boundless rumours that Microsoft will be revealing their new console , called Loop, or Infinity or whatever next year, with reports than developers already have target boxes and are preparing for launch in 2013. In comparison, word on the next PlayStation has been somewhat scarce. There has been some murmuring that Killzone 4 is currently in development for the PS4, but little else beyond that.

Sony probably doesn’t see the Wii U as much in the way of direct competition, but when the next Xbox rolls around, don’t expect as a long a wait for Sony’s next machine.

Maybe 2014 will be the year of the PlayStation 4.
