Sony finally reveals flagship Z4 smartphone

If you’re an Android owner, this time of year is like an early Christmas. Every single handset creator out there is unveiling their flagship device for 2015, and companies like HTC, Samsung and Huawei already have theirs out in the wild. Not Sony though, who suspiciously omitted their Z4 smartphone from their MWC keynote in March. A mistake they rectified in Japan today.

Sony have now officially revealed the smartphone they always were expected to, with the Z4 smartphone joining its bigger tablet brother in the new, have to have line. The Z4 makes some small improvements over the Z3 from last year (which was close to perfect), including a thinner, lighter frame and digital image stabilization enhancements to the front-facing camera. The wider lens will also let you fit more of your fat friends in the picture, so they don’t feel too left out.

As for the rest, the Z4 is pretty much the same as last years Z3. You’ll still get a 5.2′, 1080p screen, a stunning metal frame, the same wide-lens camera and impressive Hi-Res audio. The Z4 is powered by a 2GHz 8-core 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor, coupled with 3GB of RAM and Android’s latest version of Lollipop. It’ll be water and dust resistant, but right now there doesn’t seem to be a smaller, “Compact” version just yet.

In fact, outside of Japan no one really knows when the Z4 will launch. It’ll be out in a few months in the land of the rising Sun, available in three different finishes. Sony will hopefully announce international availability soon, but is probably avoiding the current rush of phones hitting the market. The Samsung Galaxy S6 just launched, while HTC and LG are busy rolling out their flagships too. A little hesitance is probably a good idea.

I just hope Sony doesn’t fall into the same trap that HTC did with their One M9, which was too little of an upgrade to justify a new device. The Z3 was a stellar device, and it’s hard to make strides that far forward year on year. Still, the Z4 has some strong competition to stand out ahead of this year.

  1. I’ve played around with the S6 Edge, I’m happy to announce that my skepticism is unfounded. Solid phone, I’m impressed

I dunno about these overtly pricey phones. Is it really worth it to give up a lung to the Black Market for it?

My upgrade is only due later this year. I may or may not get the phone. The alternative is keeping my S4 but then loading custom rom and then only pay R100 pm for my contract, or bite the bullet and get a new phone if the price is right

I’m currently using a normal S6… And I must say, best phone I’ve ever owned. It’s fast, beautiful and really nice to hold. EDIT: Oh and the battery really does charge extremely quickly. Battery life is long enough to last a day without a charge.

“New” phones are coming out faster and faster now… it’s getting out of hand! Granted Apple and Samsung are the main culprits.

They’re released on a April or October release cycle, that’s not changed.

Yeah it’s been April/May for Android, Sept/Oct for Apple for ages now

Note-range and iPhone are released in October, S-range in April. Sony doesn’t really follow a schedule.

Being a Sony mobile phone fan im quite disappointed with the Z4 specs considering the rumours that were doing the rounds about the specs being such a big jump compared to the Z1, 2 & 3 being very similar with tweaks in-between. I been holding off for a long time to get the Z4 hoping for a big upgrade compared to the Z3 and it seems its not a big deal. I think its time i rather just jump ship and continue with the Huawei phones. Specifically the P series and the mate series of phones. They brilliant.

I’d say my Lumia 930 holds up pretty well to this “new” Z4.

Why would anyone buy a phone which we all know is going to get discontinued soon? It’s common knowledge that Sony is looking to sell off it’s phone division.
