Sony Makes Fortune's Annual 101 Dumbest Moments in Business

Possibly not one of the awards that Sony wanted to win this year but in Fortune’s latest list of 101 dumbest moments in business this year Sony has managed to make the list twice… Microsoft managed to make it as well but there placement was unrelated to gaming.

Sony’s two dumbest business mistakes according to Fortune are

The beheaded Goat affair and using a bombed out cathedral as a back drop for resistance fall of man… Minor detail being that game is actually made by Insomniac and not Sony but hey Fortune is a business magazine so we will forgive them.

The beheaded goat affair was just plain stupid though, if you hadn’t heard of it you can see my report on it here.

Oh and if like me you are wondering who got the number 1 spot? Well that would be China… for all the disasters they caused this year.

Beheaded Goat Affair? I’ll google that. A cooked goose would have been more appropriate.

Lol that guy in the sheep’s skin looks very menacing! I recall Playstation recently got a new ad agency; maybe stuff like this had something to do with them firing their old agent?

There was some misconceptions about the whole goat thing. It’s given that it was a bad advertising move, but:

    # The actual article in the Official PlayStation mag was written by a guy who wasn’t in attendance; the piece was done on the basis of the party’s invite, “which employed a degree of hyperbole in order to encourage attendance”.

    # The goat in question had already been killed (ie it wasn’t killed at the party), and had been sourced from a local butcher.

    # The goat’s “entrails” were actually bowls of traditional Greek meat soup. At no stage was anyone allowed to touch the goat, nor did anyone eat or drink anything from inside the goat. After the party, the carcass was returned to the butcher.

So that all said, the original article went quite a bit overboard but like I said, still wasn’t such a good move by Sony
