Sony patents PS2 adaptor for PS3

When the PlayStation 3 launched in 2006 it had backwards compatibility, meaning you could play your library of PlayStation 2 games on it. The feature, however, was short-lived and was removed from subsequent models. Naturally, PlayStation owners weren’t too happy about this and many people have since been complaining about the loss of a very valuable ability.

Sony has fiddled and hinted at various means of bringing PlayStation 2 games back to the PlayStation 3. Software emulation sounds simple enough, but that hasn’t happened yet. Releasing PlayStation 2 titles for download off the PlayStation Network is also an option and would make Sony a lot of money, but even that hasn’t exactly happened.

Most recently is this option: a PlayStation 2 adaptor that plugs into your PlayStation 3, as a recently filed patent reveals. The solution is rather inelegant as the adaptor is, quite simply, a PlayStation 2 without an optical drive meaning that the PS2 discs are read through the Blu-ray drive of your PlayStation 3. I’m no hardware designer and I don’t know my way around any software programming, but surely software emulation would be more efficient and less costly to Sony and consumer?

This is just a patent however, so it is by no means a guarantee that this piece of hardware will ever see the light of day. Perhaps that’s not such a bad thing.

  1. Ps2 titles look like utter crap on an HDTV , upscaled reworks is the only way to go for the few titles that might be worth it.

Yeah, they would look bad, but it would still be nice to not have to plugin a PS2 just to play Persona 4.
