In an interview with Fast Company, Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton spoke about pricing for portable devices. There has been much speculation about the price of the upcoming (now possibly delayed) NGP handheld from the Japanese manufacturer.
While Tretton doesn’t mention the NGP at all, he does make comments about pricing of mobile gaming units. His statement that people are used to spending “several hundred dollars†doesn’t exactly sit comfortably with the speculated price for the NGP, which most are pegging at around $250.
According to Tretton:
“Typically it comes down to; ‘how good is the system and how bad do I want it?’ And it’s not to say that the price of the platform isn’t a consideration, but I don’t think price makes or kills a platform. Something that’s lousy and very inexpensive is not going to be successful. Something that’s pricey will ultimately find its audience if there’s enough value there.â€
Well, the PSP Go was pricey and, correct me if I’m wrong, but it didn’t exactly find a massive audience. Here’s hoping that Tretton’s comment is not a subtle ploy to prepare us all for a massive price tag on the NGP.
