Sony reaffirms promise to add PS4 media functions

Not too long ago, Sony confirmed that its PlayStation 4 would be launching without some rather rudimentary media functions; most notably the ability to play audio CD’s and MP3’s, along with DLNA networking support. Sony shortly thereafter said they’d be adding in those features with a post-release patch.  They’ve said it again, this time explaining those features’ absence.

Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida actually says Sony was caught off-guard buy the outcry about the missing features.

“The biggest surprise for us all internally at Sony was; there were so many people who passionately reacted to our announcement that there’s no MP3 support and DLNA support on day one,” said Yoshida in an interview with Giant Bomb (via CVG).

Some of the more tinfoil-hatted folk cried conspiracy, like it was a ploy by Sony to get people to use their streaming audio and video services, but Yoshida says “it’s not like that.”

“Like we’ve been saying, the focus has been always on the game features, and some of the features we wanted but we could get in on day one – game features – we were very disappointed,” he said.

“We didn’t really think about MP3 or DLNA. We always thought that we’re going to do that eventually – we’ve been doing it with all the [PlayStation] products. So it caught us off guard. People don’t really talk about these features but when we say we don’t have it some people get really mad and [say], ‘I cancelled the pre-order’.”

So Sony is working on bringing those features to the PS4 with post-launch support. I want to be really angry about it, and moan about missing features, but when Yoshida says stuff like “the focus has been always on the game features” it’s hard to stay mad.

I used DLNA on my PS3 quite a bit, streaming my own media through to the device coupled with things like PLEX and PS3 Media Server – and it’s functionality I would hate to lose with a new console. Admittedly it’s not as big a feature for me anymore for two reasons; I use Netflix and Hulu, along with Spotify and Pandora for everything now, and just about every other bit of tech in my house supports DLNA to some degree.

I was thinking about that, but with air displacement it makes perfect sense. It shifts slightly due to changes in air pressure, then when he punts into that shelf it all comes crashing down.

That and there’s probably stuff flying off the short shelf into that shelf… which would cause a similar effect.

So what can the console do? Play GAMES that’s what. First and foremost it’s supposed to play games. Not music or movies. Not stream videos to Facebook or Skype “because everyone Skypes and why aren’t you skyping” or for watching TV. They kept their eye on the ball and everyone loves and hates them for it. Killzone is going to be awesome. I can’t wait anymore.

no your missing the point dude, it can easily do more but they take it away in order to try to charge us extra for something they can give for free. when you let them do that and you dont complain they say GOTCHA and then next thing you know your paying for online passes. it starts as a mp3 and then spreads to paying to be online. if its only going to play games then they can knock that ridiculous price tag back down to the nintendo wii price. your paying all that money for what it can do. and its more convienient for alot of us to have the playstation do everything instead of hooking up a extra cd player, and other crap having wires all over the place. its just them trying to make more money off there loyal fans charging us. and because you say its ok they will stretch that “ok” as far as you let them and they will pinch every single penny they can out of you

I ended up using my PS3 for a media center only really… I haven’t played a console game in a few months. Stream all my movies to my PS works amazing. The moment the feature was removed I knew I wasn’t going to get one anymore… Now I am reconsidering.

I think they might attract a bigger market if they did put some more focus on all of it really… It is however at the moment still a gaming console first. So I agree to a certain extent.

The biggest surprise for us all internally at Sony was; there were so many people who passionately reacted to our announcement that there’s no MP3 support and DLNA support on day one,”If this was a suprise then they need to immediately fire the dumb bastard who thought that it was a good idea to get rid of it. were not fucking stupid, they tried taking advantage of customers by making us pay for mp3s just like there making us pay to be online which is complete bullshit. they went 7 years with free online, we alreay pay for internet. they just test the waters to see how much they can get away with and this time we slapped there face back into place with a backlash.
