Sony targets 150 million PS3’s

Hirai.... Did you know that the PS2 has now been around for 9 years? In that time it has sold over 140 million units… That is pretty impressive.

Well Sony is expecting the PS3 to do better, after 9 years they are expecting the PS3 to sell over 150 million units.

Though to be honest he doesn’t sound overly confident about it as Hirai goes on to say

“I want to try to see if we can exceed the PS2 numbers after nine years, otherwise why are we in this business?”

Currently Sony are planning on selling 10 million PS3’s in this financial year and then would have to start ramping up sales to hit that 150 million mark… and it’s debatable that they are going to hit the 10 million this year.

Hahahahahahahahaha. I doubt Sony will ever have it as good as they had it with the PS2!

I doubt anyone this generation will come close to the sales or excellent games library of the PS2.

The ps3 will only sell 150 + if the ps3 cost less than $100 and is sold as the cheapest blu-ray player only, remember that is the only time DVD became mainstream

Monopolies are a wonderful thing when you have them. Oh wait… 😛

Kaz’s mouth is probably the #1 reason I don’t like Sony as a company. Tretton comes in a close 2nd. Phil Harrison at least had a small degree of humility.

I don’t see what the big deal is – he’s making a broad statement of vision rather than a hard and fast financial projection. If the PS3 lasts 10 years, as Sony wants it too, this is not so far out of the ball park considering that they’ve sold 14 million and look on track to reach near 20 million by the end of this year.

Certainly, I’d say Microsoft’s declaration at the beginning of the generation that it would sell a “billion Xbox 360s” makes this look modest in comparison.
