Sony wants to lure PC gamers back with the PS4 Pro

Darryn's van is for sale

While consoles such as the Xbox One and PS4 make gaming a convenient and easy to setup hobby to throw your finances at, you can’t deny that the PC platform doesn’t balance those perks with a few advantages of it own. Besides having a more a versatile system to play with, consoles will never manage to eclipse what a PC is capable of, at least not for long as enough cash will get you a rig that is already capable of any fancy technology that isn’t on either of Sony or Microsoft’s new mid-cycle upgrades.

And that’s the market that Sony is after with their PlayStation 4 Pro, as Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House explained to The Guardian that it wasn’t the announcement of the Microsoft’s Scorpio console that spurred them on. “There’s a dip mid-console lifecycle where the players who want the very best graphical experience will start to migrate to PC, because that’s obviously where it’s to be had,” House explained.

PS4 Pro (1)

We wanted to keep those people within our eco-system by giving them the very best and very highest [performance quality]. When Playstation 4 Pro was being conceived there wasn’t a word about Project Scorpio in the marketplace. I would suggest that ‘reactive’ isn’t our approach this time around.

I’ve got a feeling that this effort to draw in a few PC faces is going to come down to budget. You’re already looking at a fair sum when you factor in the PS4 Pro itself, a 4K TV capable of HDR and a comfy couch to chill on when compared to the usual costs of setting up your own rig and maintaining it over a longer period of time. It’s convenience versus versatility. What’s your favourite flavour in that hardware showdown then?

Or are you ready to wait a year to get your hands on a console that might be even closer to a PC ecosystem, with Project Scorpio? Man, what a time to be alive.

Yeah, uh, sorry Sony, I doubt you’ll get that right.

If I had the money to get myself a kickass PC, I’d shelve my PS4 and only dust it off when Bloodborne 2 comes out.

The thing is, if the Xbox One Scorpio does not convince PC gamers to go Console then the PS4 Pro will not even make us even consider it. So this one is perfect 😉

At least with Xbox games, you can also play it on your PC.

By the time you buy a fancy 4k TV and the console you are already in the price region of a 4k PC. So might as well go original and dodge the console limitations

For me versatility wins, because that’s far more convenient. I’d rather have one PC that does everything instead of a gaming console & a PC for everything else it can’t do.

By giving them a console that costs more in line with a 4k capable gaming PC, but not quite as much? That cannot do as much? That locks them into the Sony infrastructure?

Are they targeting the top 2% (or in SA, the top 0.2%)?

MS Scorpio and PS4 Pro won’t sell well at all. It is just too early for them to think I can upgrade my console and my TV. It will cost too much. Who is really going to buy a new console if you can’t use it, and won’t look better than the current console?

The deal here is that our current gen consoles can do 900p/30fps max with all the eye-candy turned on. so even with a PS4 Pro, you will be getting a superior 1080p/60fps experience.

I know I am a touch late to mention this, But for a developer to release a game on console that has a sub-par frame rate is a cardinal sin. Did they think we wouldn’t notice ? Home front is my kind of game. The gun play is meaty. It’s open world and it’s fairly large ( Makes up for the crazy price of games ). Although the story and some of the mechanics are a touch shallow, The game would have been fairly enjoyable had it not been for the soul destroying frame rate. I know I can download a patch to solve it, But the point is developers are getting friggen lazy.

The versatility of the PC trumps the convenience of a console for me. I would rather spend money on a system with incremental upgrades than a system that is already outdated at launch and even worse in a few months or years. Sure price is a factor with PC hardware that is expensive but factor in the fact that you can upgrade a PC with a certain part and still get a good experience makes it worth it for me. With a console you have to wait years for the console maker to upgrade its system and even then backwards compatibility is a issue whereas with a PC backwards compatibility is much easier to achieve. Sorry Sony and Microsoft. I do not want your consoles.

That does not say anything about luring PC gamers to the console. It’s about preventing established console users from migrating to PC as the PS4 dates. There is a distinct difference between the perception that the article was aimed at PC gamers exclusively to try and convince them to change platform and move to console. Hence me asking the original commented why even bother. Now, It’s all here for you to read and comprehend, Something I suspect you don’t want to do. Stop being evil dude.

So you’re saying that in any debate, at least one party is “fickle and stupid” just on the basis that they value the pros of their preference more than the pros of the other party’s preference? Or even just on the basis that they express disdain? Then why even bother participating in the comments? Just a thought.

While you may have read that with tinted glasses, I was including my own bias perspective in my assessment of people. If it’s still not clear, I spew crap just as much as the next person. And I think there is a precedent on most gaming forums that will add credence to the fact that PC gamers have a huge fucking chip on their shoulder.

Fair enough. But frankly this isn’t the best forum to be expressing your assessment of people. It’s all friendly bickering here and for the most part none of us give too many shits about what the next guy prefers. We just refrain from making the room unpleasant. Anyway I don’t want to fuel this fire, I’ve just noticed a lot of aggression towards light-hearted in-between-work opinions coming from you. I’m sorry to call you out! Just thought I’d say something.

That is very presumptuous if you. The assumption that I am being aggressive is all you. Maybe your perception of my comments are bias on your part ? Yeah, I can flame and say intense stuff. But that is the exception rather then the rule. For example, If a article is posted about SJW stuff, It irks me and I react accordingly. I find it somewhat ironic that I have had fairly negative replies from a variety of folks yet I am being called out for being aggressive.

          • Dane

            September 12, 2016 at 13:54

There is a reason you get negative replies. Look at all the other comments, try to spot (another) one with a pissed off guy calling the OP an /idiot/.

          • Darren Peach

            September 12, 2016 at 13:57

Forgive my ignorance, What do you mean when you say OP ( Original Post or Other People ) and who called who a idiot ? Sincere question.

          • Dane

            September 12, 2016 at 14:31

I mean’t OP as original post (commentor). And it was this I was referring to: “While what you say is relevant and true, I can’t help thinking that the comment has a tinge of elitism to it. Something the world could do without. it’s not really about his comment, but a general observation about how fickle and stupid people can be.” You can get as technical as you want with the wording but I think you were clearly calling him (and others) an idiot.

            September 12, 2016 at 14:23

Thanks for responding. Let me say this, I support this website because it celebrates gaming. What I have noticed is some of the readers are very judgmental ( I am sure I can be too as I am doing so right now ). There seems to be a lack of fundamental tolerance towards people who express individuality and alternative independent views. In other words, swim against the tide. Yeah, Being a creative soul has meant that I see things very differently to your average Joe. I tend not to beat around the bush and I call b.s. When I see it. And that is pretty often.

I express my opinion and views with a great deal of passion and emotion, again being a creative creature may have something to do with this. But, Being a adult man who does not concede on the way I see the world and the hatefull nature of the human condition, I must tell you stop judging.

We all have views and when I asked the original poster a rhetorical question, I somehow found myself in a debate with those that unfortunately keep disappointing me with their narrow minded perspective that are a group of followers with no real individuality. And, Just because people keep it light, It does not mean I must automatically adhere to that prohibitive standard. I have one go at life and then I am dust. I will do it my way.

Now, If you are wondering how I can be so callous, I am replying in kind to the hidden aggression and group mentality that many unfortunate souls follow. And you are completely oblivious to the fact that the things you say are incredibly insulting and hurtful. In closing, When I say shit like this, I am being severely aggressive both out of resent and frustration.

            Peace.
