Sony will implement tiered pricing for Vita games

We’ve discussed it many times before. Not every single game on a system is worth that same, standard pricing. A lot of games would benefit from a tiered pricing; new IP or games that aren’t exactly premium titles but are actually good, fun games would do more trade if they weren’t sold for the same price as guaranteed blockbusters.

Sony’s done a smart and will be doing just that for the PlayStation Vita.

In an effort to combat the rise of cheap smartphone and tablet gaming, Sony will be offering Vita games in a broad spectrum of prices.

“I think it would be safe to assume we will take a more tailored approach than perhaps we’ve done in the past," SCEE CEO Jim Ryan told Gi.Biz . "It’s our challenge to ensure that the gaming experience that we provide is closer to that TV console experience than it is to your 69p thing that you’ve downloaded on your iPhone. If we do that and we provide great value to the consumer on games like Uncharted, I think the possibility to sustain historic console type price points is there."

Well done, Sony. Let’s hope this moves beyond the Vita and to other platforms. I have no doubt that poor selling, but good games like Enslaved would have sold many more copies if they were just priced cheaper. The unfortunate side to this is one we’ve seen with Ridge Racer; a game with a lower price point – but almost no content. Instead, it’ll be supported post release through DLC.

Now let’s talk about those memory card prices….
