Easily one of the most requested features for the PS3 and PSN is cross game chat, the ability to talk to a friend who isn’t in the game you are playing.
This feature has been available on the Xbox 360 since the beginning of time and we’ve continuously been expecting Sony to add it to the PS3 and have been growing increasingly confused by their apparent refusal to do so.
However we finally have an answer and it’s not what anyone wanted to hear.
According to an interview between Eurogamer and Sony Worldwide Studios President, Shuhei Yoshida, cross game chat will never appear on the PS3. Ever.
The reason is quite simple, the PS3 has 256Mb system RAM and 256Mb video RAM and once a game grabs that RAM it just never releases it.
Basically it was a design decision that was implemented in the PS3 before they realised the importance (at least in feature comparisons) of cross game chat and it’s not something that can be fixed with a firmware update. It’s a hardware issue that won’t be fixed.
The PS Vita however won’t have the issue as the PS3 vita has 512Mb system RAM plus an added 128Mb V-Ram and cross game chat is now an OS feature for that handheld.
Though to be perfectly honest I don’t see why you would want cross game chat on a handheld but I’m not going to complain that the options there.
