Sony’s in it to win Next gen, says Blacklight dev

Jared Gerritzen, Zombie Studios boss and creative director, is incredibly enthusiastic about his company’s newfound relationship with Sony. Their game, Blacklight Retribution, will be hitting the PlayStation 4, and coms on the heels of Sony being “very, very proactive” about setting up a relationship.

“I think Sony is really in to win this one. I’m good friends with a lot of guys at Microsoft, I’m under their NDA flag, and Microsoft definitely has a different outlook than Sony does,” he told Destructoid.

“Sony, like they say ‘Yeah, PlayStation 3 wasn’t what we wanted it to be in comparison in the arms race.’ So now they’re going hard, man. It’s pretty cool, on all points. I think that it will be really interesting to see what Xbox fires back with. It’ll be an awesome E3. Sony is just like, ‘GO! GO! GO! Let’s make this hardcore! Let’s get all these devs in and let’s make it as good as we can.’”

He believes that Sony’s incredibly pro-active role in courting developers; and it’s something that’s going to help them out in the long run; and his earlier comment nestles will with my own belief that sony’s really focusing on gamers and developers with its new console, while Microsoft, it seems, is focusing on entertainment services and Kinect.

“They could have just been like, ‘Yeah, put it on the PlayStation 4. Cool.’ But they’re sending us kits, they’re sending us everything, they’re pulling us into PR groups, they’re setting up these events for us, and it’s just awesome,” he said.

“Considering the game’s been out, most publishers had been ‘yeah we don’t understand cause the game’s already out so whatever.’ But [Sony’s] been really awesome. ‘Yeah let’s get this, here you can talk to these guys, let’s introduce you.’ It’s been really, really cool.”

Anyone else think this chap’s on speed?

Hahaha! Yeah, defo be tripping. So, if one has to sell 5 gazillion copies of Tomb raider in order to break even, how many units of the PS4 are they going to sell? Or are my as-yet-never-to-be children/minions going to be bearing the brunt in the future?

Game is free to play. And not all companies spend their money poorly like enix did.City Interactive sold 2.5 million copies of sniper ghost warrior…enough to get them the money to make 2 more sgw games!

I meant the PS4. Today we’ve pretty much been speaking about breaking even, or not, so just wondering how many next-gen consoles will have to be sold to break even…

Oh right. Where did the PS3 break even? 50 Million sales? I think the PS4 is ‘cheaper’ to produce so depending on the ‘subsidy’ they add to the price they might break even far sooner.

I really hope so! The things are looking I am going to jump ship! (To all the fanboys out there, that is what logical people do, they follow… LOGIC, and don’t stick to something through some false sense of loyalty) Sounds like xbox is just going to be for marketing, (I want to add SIGH in there but fear Sir rants a lot may end me hehehe:)

            hear hear.
PS360 Have 140million consoles out there after half a decade, and the poor devs are struggling to get 2% of the market to buy there games.

Next gen is the demise of the console and many 3rd party devs.

This is a new gear from Sony that i haven’t seen in ages. And if this is anything to go by, it’s pretty safe to say Sony’s going to Rock E3 this year.

    I’m still sceptical.

I think Sony can win next-gen provided it doesn’t slip into old-Sony mode (you know that arrogant little prick who told everyone to get second jobs).

Just take EA as an example, for a moment there it seemed that Gaming’s Greatest Sinner was on a new path, and its halo was shinning brightly. It seemed to have learnt from the Spore debacle from a few years earlier. Then suddenly, almost like it had to take a breather… or a shit, the old EA emerged. It was back to being the most hated game’s company on Earth.

Sony has a lot to prove next-gen, and to their credit, they’ve definitely stepped up to the plate towards the middle and end of this gen. But, I’m not sure you can change a leopard’s spots.

As for Microsoft, they merely got lucky (by capitalising on Sony’s hubris), but as for being able to change themselves, I seriously doubt the big M will repeat its fortunes next gen. They’ve consistently shown how out of touch they are with gamers (but I’d gladly eat humble pie if my prediction is at Pachter’s level).

Damn it James why can we ever agree, this whole gen I been flying the MS flag up until recently when MS super glued a giant gaming C- blocker to my console called Kinect. Now I am headed back to Sony they seem to be the kick ass hardcore Sony of old. Anyone that own an xbox (lowercase intended) will tell how Shafted they were by MS, Forza, Halo and Gears every fuckin year! Accompanied by timed exclusive dlc for a game I don’t like (COD), I mean xbox live hasn’t evolved at all since the 360’s inception by now we should not be paying for gold, were as PSN members get free games we get virtual t-shirts for our avatars. Avatars who unlike nintendo’s don’t actually serve any purpose accept to wave at you dopeyly as you start up your xbox. I really feel like an ex navy vet after vietnam or a girl who’s been neglected by her lover and turned to the other guy coz he is saying and doing all the right things and Sony is that other guy. Sony supporters still have the likes of Beyond two souls and last of of us to look forward to this gen, the lack of motion based games on PS3 is so refreshing as I have come to hate that purple fucking logo as it essentailly means you buying a broken game for 8 year olds.

Whatever Microsoft does with the Xbox, the consumer wins at the end of the day, since they’re under a lot of pressure now. I’m also considering jumping ship from Xbox, but will wait and see.

All we need to do is buy games and leave all the games to the people on silly wages who make them, if they want to keep making tones of money they will find ways to make better games for less money
