Sony’s SingStar…In Afrikaans?

If ever there was any evidence that Sony, as whole, took South Africa just a little more seriously than Microsoft as a viable territory for video gaming, you’d imagine it would be the implementation of PSN day and date with the PS3’s local launch. Yes, the PSN was functional on Sony’s console right out of the box; no 4 year wait for local services like Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Still, that’s not it.

No. What’s most impressive about Sony’s attitude to South Africa is their imminent release of a localised version of their Karaoke title, Singstar. In what’s likely to become a smash hit and party game of choice across JHB’s east rand and the whole of Pretoria, Singstar will be available in Afrikaans.

No disrespect to our Afrikaans readers; I’d rather eat broken glass from the floor of a public restroom than play it , but you guys? You’re gonna love it. List of artists whose songs will be featured after the jump.

Blackie Swart
Bobby van Jaarsveld
Bok van Blerk & Robbie Wessels
David Fourie

As with Geoff I am going to be giving this one a miss but it’s really cool to see Sony supporting local languages

You forgot a couple of very key things Geoff.

    1. You MUST be completely sloshed to play this game. It’s an ABSOLUTE pre-requisite.

    2. They got the name wrong – It’s supposed to be called PUB IDOLS or Karaoke Star.

It’s implicit. All Karaoke games require copious amounts of booze. As i said on twitter, I expect sales of Klipdrift to soar after this gets released/

Nothing at all! I can actually speak the language. The music’s generally pretty horrible though.

No love for Bles Bridges? 😛

    But still, wow.

I vote for having downloadable song packs for Jack Parow, Fokofpolisiekar and the more not-your-standard-sokkie-sokkie music.

Should have called it “Sony’s Lekker Bakgat Singstar Sokkie Treffers vir die Langpad Volume 1” though.

Unless they put “Swaar Metaal” from KOBUS on there 🙂
