Source 2 could be coming to Dota 2

My day brightened up exponentially when Valve announced Source 2.0 a few months ago. Why? Well, the original Source engine is responsible for some of my all-time favourite games and franchises; Half-Life 2, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, and obviously, Dota 2. A new engine should, on paper at least, result in better games moving forward (and Half-Life 3… duh). For that reason, it brings me great joy to hear that Dota 2 could be getting some Source 2 loving.

This is according to Venture Beat who spotted the following on SteamDB (via PC Gamer):

HL3 CONFIRMED

The Source 2 content in Dota 2 is not yet live. Instead, the changelog on SteamDB reflects additions that Valve has made to the Dota 2 package without pushing them out to everyone that has the MOBA installed. It’s likely, however, that the Source 2 code will debut within the next few days — as that’s how Valve has pushed out updates in the past.

If this is all true, how Source 2 can benefit Dota 2 remains to be seen. Seeing as the MOBA thrives on community created content though, it doesn’t take a stats man to figure out that that could be the primary focus for the update, especially when taking into consideration what Valve’s Jay Stelly said when the engine was officially announced:

The value of a platform like the PC is how much it increases the productivity of those who use the platform. With Source 2, our focus is increasing creator productivity. Given how important user generated content is becoming, Source 2 is designed not for just the professional developer, but enabling gamers themselves to participate in the creation and development of their favourite games

Yeah I’m gonna go ahead and say new hats confirmed! Not that I’m complaining really. I used to laugh at people who coughed up money for cosmetics. I’ve since learnt to appreciate them, and have spent a fair share of money myself over the years. I would not say no to giving the content creators more to work with.

What I really want however is a proper game overhaul in terms of graphics, UI, and features. Will that happen when Source 2 comes to Dota 2? I doubt it, but maybe it’ll be something that happens in future if the support of a new engine is there.

Woohoo! So does this mean we’ll see Gordon in a Gabe Newell suite, and whenever he gets shot the fat blubbers? HL-3 blah blah never gonna happen….

Hmm. I was going to give cabbage some credit for having Dark Messiah there, but noticed he left off the best Source engine game. So close to a compliment, so close.

Dark Messiah, or alternatively known as “The Adventures of Sir Kicksalot in the Land of Conspicuously Placed Spike Traps.” Still – I really enjoyed that game!

You know, it’s great that Valve’s decided to release Source 2, but somehow I think they’ve lost/traded their love for games to money, in the sense that they haven’t really released anything amazing since Portal 2, which is really sad…

Couldn’t agree with ya more. I love the @!$#% out of Steam and how it makes things so easily available… But would love it even more if Valve went back to their roots and actually made a game…

I don’t see how he could be commenting on this article and say Valve’s last release was Portal 2…

Not so sure I’d call it good because it sold well….Hatred outsold GTA V and The Witcher 3 on Steam…

I am all for more “hats”, but it is not only that. If you have a look at the workshop items you will see for instance a Hat Creator completely redid all Juggernaught’s attack animation by giving him dual swords instead of the current 1 double handed sword. Things like this excite me as the possibilities are endless for these creators
