Terminator

There are a ton of games that come out every year, that go underneath the radar. Games with decent budgets, franchises and licenses attached to them. And as a pseudo-fan of Warhammer 40K’s lore, I’m trying to figure out how I missed seeing a first-person shooter set in that universe, being announced over a year and a half ago. It’s called Space Hulk: Deathwing, and until somebody else picks up the former THQ license to make a new Space Marine game, it sounds pretty solid.

Mind you, I’m basing all of this off of zero gameplay and anecdotal evidence only. For instance, here’s the latest trailer for the game, which was rendered in-engine. Which also means that it contains zero actual gameplay:

I’ve always dug Warhammer 40K however, and the Space Marines who are the face of that tabletop game series. In the actual lore of Warhammer 40K, a space hulk refers to a spaceship graveyard essentially. It’s a decent enough locale for a new game, but I’m keen to see if the game does justice to the Space Marines and the Terminators. terminators are hardcore yo. They’re a force to be reckoned with, a Jaeger that is boiled down to a more manageable size and pretty much the cream of the Space Marine crop. According to the wiki, Terminators are:

Space Marine Veterans who have earned the right to wear Tactical Dreadnought Armour, better known as Terminator Armour, and serve as their Chapter’s greatest infantry assets, each essentially serving as a walking tank. Tactical Dreadnought Armor combines the technological developments of Power Armour with the sealed environmental suits designed for starship crews that work in highly unstable or corrosive environments such as inside the high pressure casings of plasma reactor shields.

Terminators are always members of the elite 1st Company of a Codex Astartes-compliant Space Marine Chapter. All suits of Terminator Armour have built-in teleportation devices which allow them to deploy anywhere via deep strike, although more often they are deployed using Land Raiders. Terminator Squads consist of a Terminator Sergeant and between 4 and 9 Terminators.

Terminators are truly amongst the greatest heroes of Mankind, bold warriors in whom the indefatigable heroism of a Space Marine is combined with the terrible weaponry and indomitable mass of Tactical Dreadnought Armour. No foe is safe from a Terminator assault, not a horde of Orks or a Chaos Titan. Terminators are nearly invincible, unstoppable and they never yield.

We’ve seen a ton of super-soldiers in games already, but there’s something about the Terminator that makes me want to play as a super-soldier god. Beyond the knowledge that the game is using the Unreal Engine 4 to power the game, publisher Focus Home Interactive have kept a tight lid on the title. The game will however be on display at GDC next month, so hopefully I can finally get a glimpse at it and see it in action.

    yeah baby, death wing terminators
Dark Angels in da house bitchez

<–Played dark angels space marines on the tabletop game.

wasnt a fan of the previous space hulk game though. didnt feel like warhammer.
computer games will never capture how OP space marines are though, because games have to be balanced =/
    its a pity.

Space marines arent about these small little one squad battles, i want a legit 40k RPG. i want the scale of the space marines to be honoured.
give me either one space marine vs the world or enough space marines to cover a world.

Then you probably really enjoyed 2011’s Space Marine 🙂 It was an awesome game, but too short and sadly a bit unimaginative/repetitive in places. Also, too few jump pack levels 😛

For reals, it’s a budget beauty by now. A rough gem, but the kind of game that marketed itself by saying that “cover was for pussies”.

aye, i did, there was a little something something missing, but the game was hella fun.
wooden acting aside, it needed to be darker and more brutal.
I prefered Tau: Firewarrior in all honesty, the FPS title made the Tau feel pretty badass, them rail guns.

Deathwing eh? That means that it’s the Dark Angels, my favorite chapter! (Imperial Fists, Salamanders, Blood Ravens tied for 2nd place)

The sight of a proper 40k game fills me with ecstatic glee, like opening a brand new LEGO on christmas morning 😀 right before getting dragged to church 😛
Can’t say I’m comfortable with the bolters: should they fire that fast? I thought that 2011’s Space Marine nailed the bolters, and I really hope that we see another 3d person 40k game like it one day, one that incorporates Space Hulks and other races besides orks and chaos space marines. Jump pack + Deamonhammer = earthquaking/earshattering goodness >:D

As awesome as the trailer is, the music doesn’t quite fit with the over-the-top madness of the 40k world though. Check out these 2 trailers, with earphones:

storm bolters fire twice s fast as regular bolters, theyr double barrelled and have double the firing rolls on the tabletop game, so theyr probably not fast enough.

its a weapon for an elite soldier.

a bigger concern for me is the wisdom of pitting terminators against tyranids.
terminators arent the most agile of space marines, stick 100 000 of them on a battlefield together and say “smash” and they can take on just about any army in the universe.
but put one of them against 5 tyranids and he simply wont hit anything because he cant lift his arms that high.

would have preferred artificer armour to terminator armour, gives the same 2+ protection without sacrificing anything.
deathwing are terrifying terminators, but there are better situations to use them.
taking on a space hulk is a job for demon hunters, scouts and apothacaries.

Perhaps not if he’s equipped with a power hammer / shield combo (like DoW’s terminators), but with dual lightning claws on the other hand >:P

assault terminators maybe, they still seem slow though.
ive always been a fan of heavy artillery terminators though, assault cannons and hellfire missles tend to be more effective.

lightning claws are the most badass weapon in the the game though.

Terminators have heavy armor specifically because there is usually little room to maneuver in a space hulk. Terminator armor is still more survivable in a Hulk because there isn’t always enough room to take advantage of the extra mobility of specially artificed power armor.

I can answer that. In the close confines of a Space Hulk, maneuverability isn’t important. The armor is so massive that it’ll take up the majority of the space, with enough left to swing swords and hammers and shit. This allows the Terminator to make full use of the armor’s ungodly amount of protection and still swing a giant hammer. It potentially allows one marines to pin down a full corridor. Hope this illuminates you.

I understand the tactical advantage of their size in a small space, but that relies on the space marine ships being small, which theyr not, nothing about the space marines life is small, their ships, all of them are floating cathedrals, built for the glory of the emporer.
they are a series of cavernous halls.
these are not imperial guard ships.

space hulk duty is usually the duty of the apothacaries, recovering gene seeds etc.
but they wouldnt send deathwing terminators into a graveyard without a reason, but that reason is not tactical.

funny thing is, its not even a sword thats in the history books, but, space marine captains all have swords worthy of having a name. especially in an elite unit like the deathwing.

Azreals sword of secrets would probably require a similar age restriction to hardcore pron.

Didn’t they actually have mainly chain swords and some Thunder hammers with the odd Thunder sword.

chain swords are considered standard equipment in the tabletop game, giving no strength bonus dont ignore armour saves, but giving you one extra attack by sacrificing the standard bolter with a bolt pistol.
not usable by terminators and usually only used by squad leaders in regular tactical marine squads

power swords are the upgrade to chain swords, giving no strength bonus, but ignoring armour saves and the extra attack you get from the bolt pistol only uses standard str and armour saves.

thunder hammers are alot less common, giving both a str upgrade and ignore armour, but no extra attack, as they are 2 handed weapons on everything other than terminators.
they are usually considered commander weapons.

terminators have power fists as defaults, which ignore armour saves and give a massive boost to strength.

(strength vs enemy toughness is used to determine what you have to roll in order to wound a unit)

a standard tactical marine only has a bolter, equipping anything other than that costs points. the tabletop game uses a point system to determine army size/strength, i think chain swords costs 10 points per unit, the more powerfull the upgrade, the more it costs.
standard army sizes are 1500 points, so getting the balance between unit numbers and unit upgrades is key.
