Speed and weight! Tekken 7 gets one old and one new face

Tekken games have always had a solid roster of characters. From robot P-Klap mohawk dude to that cyborg ninja bliksem that hardly ever uses the f***ing sword in his hand that he holds in battle, Tekken locker rooms are diverse to say the least. And the latest edition of the King of the Iron Fist Tournament, is so Raven.

That’s according to Tekken 7 director Katsuhiro Harada, who braved the neon glow of the Las Vegas strip to announce a pair of new and old fighters for Tekken 7 at the Evo 2016 championship. First up, the heavyweight Bob is back.

First seen in Tekken 6, Robert Richards was a martial arts prodigy stuck in a body which had to obey the laws of physics. So he bulked up considerably so that he could throw harder blows and still maintain his agility, effectively bitch-slapping Newtonian laws in the process.

Here’s some video of Bob in action, wearing a trendy new Hawaiian shirt as he utilises freestyle karate techniques with surprising amounts of agility in the ring. It’s like the Iron Fist staff is utterly obsessed with that Hollywood classic movie, Beverly Hills Ninja:

The other new face shown off was Master Raven, although Harada didn’t mention if she was related to Tekken 5’s resident ninja, Raven. She’s also got some ninjutsu skills when in action, striking hard and fast. Master Raven looks especially potent in the juggle department, while those short-range teleports appear to give her some positioning advantages. Here’s a video of her in action as well:

Tekken 7 is out next year on Xbox One, PC and PS4. So far, the roster also includes Heihachi Mishima, Kazuma Mishima, King, Paul Phoenix, Nina Williams, Asuka Kazama and Street Fighter’s Akuma who’ll actually have a part to play in the story instead of being just a superfluous extra.

What a cool cartoon! Made so few episodes too.

It was gloriously silly and made no bones about it

The game has more juggles than Pravin Gordhan has with our national budget

Nina Williams, oh yes. I remember, Tekken 3, what and awesome character to play, good mix of speed and power. AND could counter attack, which not all in Tekken 3 could.

Still fun in Tekken 6, but, somehow, Tekken 3 is the real Tekken to me.

Will still buy this (way after release), so my wife and I can bliksem the crap out of each, but she MUCH prefers the super high speed of Soul Calibre to Tekken.

My wife actually loves playing these games. But she hates playing against me, because I won’t let her win.

Ah, yes. My wife has played Piano and other instruments in concerts, as a teenager and early twenties (ill health forced a stop). Her fingers move very quickly and assuredly across a game controller, I think as a result of the piano training since age 3.

WHEN she is in the mood to play fighting games, she is very, very good and I must fight very hard to win.

Key word there is “when”, right?

I usually have to end up throwing a game or two, or else my wife loses interest very quickly. Hates losing. And I’m of the opinion that if you win, it should be because you earned it and not because someone else let you.

Therein lies the problem with competitive gaming with a loved one. Having to throw a game or three in order to make the experience more pleasant. LOL.

Once my son is old enough to game with me (right now, he’s only 1), I am NOT going to do it with him! I want him to be absolutely overjoyed and over the moon when he finally beats me at a game. So, probably when he’s 5 or 6!

Be smart. Play a game that requires a old mans thinking.

I hear you, I cannot wait for my daughter (2.5 years) to get a bit older, so that we can play certain games together.

Also, at 5, teach her chess like I was, so not just Xbox or PC games.

Oh hell yes! My lad is going to be a thinker. At his age, his problem solving skills are already brilliant.
And along with assisting to develop his cognitive capacity, I’m also sending him to MMA classes. He’s gonna be able to kick ass if negotiations fail!

I like the balance thing, is very important. So, learn chess, and how to swim, for example.

My daughter is definitively a problem solver and a deep thinker. You can sometimes see the wood burning as she considers something, walks around it, views it from all angles. Just like me. I cam insatiably curious about the world and how it works.

I did Jujistu for many years, so my daughter may just do that or similar. As is suited to her, of course. Maybe just Judo, a lot less violent, but very effective.

Love jiu jitsu (referring Brazilian JJ, not the old school type, though that is also awesome). It’s like a real life chess game. Always gotta out think your opponent, can’t just be a brawler and expect to win them all.

indeed yes. I switched from Judo at age 13, though, having done Judo, which is very much non striking, from age 4. Judo and Jujutsu share the same sorts of grapples and holds, though, but then suddenly I had to learn dodge, strike, before throw instead of, dodge, move in and throw. When things are ingrained in you like that, i.e. without thought, it was very, very difficult to suddenly learn to strike first.

It can be tough to adapt to a new discipline. It’s been too many years since I’ve done any form of training, so I won’t even go into my experiences.
But I’ve seen so many guys going from pure Jits grappling to MMA grappling, suddenly having to contend with being hit while they’re trying to get into a dominant position. It can be very jarring at first.

I found it very, very difficult, as the grapple and throws were the same or virtually the same, but to strike first. And the strike first was important, as you struck a part of the body meant to cause momentarily pause in the opponent, such as a belly slap, in the right place, not middle, off to the side would cause a moments major pain and hopefully a break to thrown easily. Or to disarm the knife attack, rather than move around it.

BUT it was many, many years ago now.

Yup, as long as you can say “i did that”. I hear you, also wan’t the best at it, but I didn’t do it to be the best, I did it because I enjoyed it. Otherwise, why bother?!? I see too many people doing something just so that they can be the best. They enjoy winning.
But then they lose, get all demotivated and just don’t bother to train anymore.

well, an important life lesson we need to somehow impart to our children. You can still have fun, without winning.

Although winning and striving to be the best is important too.

Ah, yes. Keyword is most certainly when. And I can safely say that having a child and about to have a new one, WHEN is certainly the key question. Almost never……

Yes, indeed. I wait till she sleeps, but trouble is when you fall asleep at more or less the same time.

She is staying awake longer now, as she is at home, working a few hours per week online for a University. So, sometimes my gaming time is very, very limited.
