When we first wrote about Capcom’s latest Battle for the Stones tournament it seemed as if the new style of competition would be a change for the good in the fighting games community. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is the latest iteration of the popular fighting game, but this past weekend at Milan Games Week, low attendance and an infinite attack from Spider-Man put Capcom vs. Marvel in a tough position.
Spider-Man’s time to shine
Poor Spidey has had a rough time in the MCU, but Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite has put our favourite neighbourhood Super Hero has no jumped into the lime-light with an infinite combo with one of the slow moving projectiles. Developers often work tirelessly to make sure endless combos and abilities are prevented. However, you can leave it up to the players to dig deeper and find ways to break the game. This is exactly what Japanese player Muto showed on Twitter using the Reality Stone and Spider-Man’s Web ball to trap his opponent.

The issue with Spider-Man’s game-ruining ability is that it’s unlikely to occur in a professional setting as catching an opponent with a slow-moving attack won’t be an option. However, with some combos Spider-Man could become a slight problem and it’s something that is seemingly causing unrest in the Marvel vs. Capcom community.
But, luckily for Spider-Man, that was the least of Marvel vs. Capcom concerns this past weekend.
Milan Games Week
This past week Milan hosted their annual Games Week which featured the second regional qualifier for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite’s Battle for the Stones. The first regional qualifier which took place in South California saw 170 participants signing up for the first qualifier. Milan Games Week, which was the only regional qualifier in Italy, saw only 13 signed up for the competition. It was an unfortunate circumstance for Marvel vs. Capcom, and one that has sparked discussion over regional qualifiers.

To put it in perspective, players from different titles have been asking for South Africa (or Africa) qualifiers for a number of years. Some games have started showing interest in the region, but the fact of the matter remains that South Africa could have fielded more than 13 players if a qualifier was included at the rAge expo which is taking place this coming weekend. It’s not a hot topic globally, and other regional qualifying regions will now need step it up in order to not have this happen again.
