Square Enix goes indie

Square Enix has announced “Collective”, a new partnership with Indiegogo, but I think people are more excited about the opportunities to raid the Eidos IP. Crowd funding something called Collective, what is this, communism?

Collective lets indie developers pitch their idea for a crowd funded game, as would be expected with Indiegogo. However, every idea that garners success gets to partner with Square Enix to ensure proper scope, project management and development tools are in place. As explained in the announcement:

The rise of crowdfunding platforms have pushed the concept of gamer choice to a new level, and Collective allows you to use your voice – but with the reassurance that before a project goes through to the funding stage, it’ll be checked and helped by our team to confirm that the scope of the pitch is in line with the team’s ability and ambition to create, as well as utilising our experience of game production to attach realistic budgeting plans.

[…]If for any reason you don’t make it through this due diligence phase, we’ll give you feedback on why, or what you might need to add – so whatever happens you get something you can work with.

This sounds like a great idea to me. Often indie developers don’t realize the obstacles that they may encounter in porting to multiple platforms, or promising bigger worlds as stretch goals. This should help games get more support as backers are ensured that they are feasible.

Even more exciting, Square Enix is opening up the Eidos back-catalogue:

Plus – you could have the chance to work with some of the older Eidos IP from our back-catalogue. More information on submission parameters and IP selection will be made available at GDC Next, November 5-7 at the LA Convention Center.

This means that we could see some long lost IP getting lovingly revived by some indie developers with fresh cash. I’m honestly excited about what we could see – fanboy indie developers might be best suited to bringing these games back to life.
