Square Enix can be a funny company. While I still have a soft place for Square thanks to supplying my childhood self with some incredible RPG experiences, things have not always been great for Squeenix. At least they can laugh at some of their foibles as evidenced in this new video for Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD remaster.
Lessons from Spira is something of a highlight reel for Final Fantasy X/X-2 fans filled with some big highs and lows in honour of the HD remaster now being available on PS4. From learning to play Blitzball to learning about love and loss, it’s all in the video. Yes, including that awful laughing scene. You know the one.
I think I enjoy this video a bit too much, particularly the fact that Square Enix is comfortable enough after all these years to laugh at themselves. It reminds me of all the things I enjoyed about the game and also hammers home that point about HD Remasters. I honestly don’t remember the game as looking worse than this – this matches the image I have of the game in my mind’s eye. I loved playing FFX all those years ago, and watching this video reminded me of just some of my favourite aspects. And now I want to replay it and see if nostalgia is just that strong or if it really was such a great experience.
I know there are far too many remasters lately. It feels like companies are doing more remasters than making new games. However, I’m glad that some of these games are getting the fresh attention and polish to keep them alive for years to come, and to introduce them to a generation of gamers who would never play them otherwise. Maybe I’m part of the problem (I know that I am), but I really don’t have much of a problem with remastering games so that they look and feel more modern. Now, Bioware, please release a remastered Mass Effect trilogy before Mass Effect 4 the new Mass Effect is released.

I actually mimic the laugh in my car when I’m stuck in traffic from work when these Cape Town people drive like imbeciles 😛
Also playing through FF8, FF9 and FF10 yearly has become one of my most loved traditions… played 10 earlier today 3/4 done and still loving it.

I don’t know why but I can always replay these games, the laughing scene never bothered me or my friends from memory, it was just silly and seemed intentional.

Excellent video.
I especially liked how the music changed to the fight music for the “You taught us how to fight” part.

Each character had Ultimate weapons, to get Lulus weapon you had to go to the thunder plains and dodge 200 consecutive lighting strikes. Did that back on the PS2 and I’ll do it again.

Sounds easy, dodge the first lightning strike and then stand where it struck. I mean lighting doesn’t hit the same place twice 😛

FF13 had a ‘very’ different writing style and pacing… Not sure if something was lost in translation but I just couldn’t get into it.
I can’t complain too much though since I love FFVI through to X, they gave me five games in a row that kicked butt.

To answer why 13 didn’t feel the same as the others, Hironobu Sakaguchi departed the company after making 12, basically the soul of the series, I don’t think there’ll be another one like the old series again

One of my all time favorite entries in the franchise. Say what you want about it; but I had more emotional highs and lows with this game than I did with 9 and 13.

Playing through ME trilogy, ME3 really doesn’t need a remaster. It looks great, as is. And I wouldn’t pay for a remaster of them either.

not saying they don’t look great – played them recently and they were rad. but could use some modernizing and prettiness. plus, i want to play them on my newer consoles so that I don’t have to worry about plugging in ancient tech when i want to play. i know, i should just get it on PC instead…

Well, on the newer consoles, maybe there’s a case for it. But I really am tired of seeing remaster after remaster popping up these days. I’d rather they focused on ME(4) then remastering the first 3.
