Square Enix still talking about reform

Square enix fingerWe’ve told you a few times now that Square Enix has admitted to making mistakes and is looking to reform the company. Okay, cool. Part of that meant more communication with consumers, which should make us all happy. However, I’m starting to get a bit worried.

Speaking to Infoseek, Yosuke Matsuda explained that Square Enix needs to move into a new business model, one where development and sales are less separate:

Development and and sales were divided, and the game developers only needed to concentrate on their work. That’s where the strengths of our company laid within.

Past gaming generation changes took roughly three to five years. Nowadays, released titles are updated every day, and it only takes about three months for a situation to completely change. In order to react with such speed, it is urgent for development and sales to be unified as one.

He went on to say that developers no longer get to work away from the gaze of their audience. Content needs to be shared on a consistent basis, with more interaction with consumers. You see, in theory that sounds great. However, it doesn’t just mean that we will see more awesomeness sooner – it can also mean that creativity is stifled and games are made to appeal to a soundbite culture rather than taking the time to make something truly innovative.

Part of what made Square Enix games so great was the depth of each game. They weren’t just thrown together – games were well thought out, developed and surprising. While I would love to see more, I’m just worried that this will mean that we see more of the things that have been making me so upset lately. C’mon Square Enix – do the research on your target audience and make them happy. Don’t just go grasping at straws to try to turn a profit.

They have alienated their fans long ago…I honestly do not know what their plan moving forward is…..reading that whole interview they are adamant F2P and DLC is the way to go…..they need reasonable goals too. I mean they expected way too much from games like TR and Sleeping Dags…Which are brilliant games but are failures……Now DE is probably going online too…companies these days…This industry is going to sh*t.

This is what I don’t understand. I’ve played, or am playing, 3 SE games this year. Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs & Hitman Absolution. They’re all great games. The problem isn’t the developers, it’s sales – and shoving sales into development won’t help a damn. You can’t change direction on a game a year into development because a salesperson has decided that a trend has changed or been introduced & you need to alter the game to include it.

No wonder he was mumbling about mobile games. Those are quick to get to market.

I loved all 3 those games. I haven’t finished Hitman yet, but Tomb Raider and Sleeping dogs were just brilliant.

I’ll do that later tonight. I saw your score on the sniper challenge – 1.7mil. Most I ended up with was 1.3mil.

Sleeping Dogs was just awesome. This whole, “did not sell 5 million copies in month 1, must be a failure” stuff is just annoying

Square Enix has actually done right by me twice in the last few weeks.

    1. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is an awesome game, and honestly feels more like old school final fantasy than half the newer ones with the one it plays out. Great game.

    2. Kingdom hearts HD 1.5 Remix is also probably the best HD remaster I think iv played, they did a good job with this.

I agree with them mostly in that sales and development have to be unified these days, but I think Square also needs to realize already development does not need to cost them millions too make a good game. Square were always known for quality of titles, especially the FF series. These days though most of their stuff just feels like big budget spectacles with out any substance.

Am I the only one that feels when they where still “Squaresoft”, Final Fantasy was at its peak…damn I will never ever in a million years forget what an impact Final Fantasy 8 left on me. I fell in love with the characters, the story, the combat and the romance.

    NEVER FORGET!!!
