Star Citizen boldly crosses the $40 million frontier

That’s not a typo. Star Citizen has managed to drum up enough financial support, meaning that a couple of bonuses are on the way to backers.

With enough cash in the bank to fund a few not-a-compounds, Nkandla style, the Cloud Imperium Games developed sci-fi pilot title will have two additional systems for players to navigate through when the game releases in 2015. According to the Star Citizen website, total crowdfunding now clocks in at $40 037 960 from 405 370 backers. That’s an average of almost $100 per pledge. Guess some folks really want to take to space again.

And already, there’s a new stretch goal. $41 million is the next goal, which will unlock the following for the game:

Procedural Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating entire planets worth of exploration and development content.

A special strike team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this technology a reality.

I’m dead keen to see the game arrive in 2015. I just wish that my PC was capable of running it, because creator Chris “Wing Commander” Roberts has been clear about the fact that Star Citizen is going to boast visuals that’ll knock the socks off of consoles.

My hopes are high, and provided that the game never gets stuck in the kind of limbo that Duke Nukem Forever found itself in when 3D Realms went off the deep end, I’m hoping that it’ll start a small surge in bringing back the space exploration simulator.

hahah nice but remember, we are not excited because it is PC exclusive, we are excited that it is an ultimate space sim that we all were looking for.

As a PC gamer, I still think it is so damn stupid to have platform exclusive games but yeah, they decided that they want to build a PC game to have no limits on looks.

There are also games like The Witcher 3, Dragon Age Inquisition, TESO, Wildstar, new SC expansion, GTA V for PC are the few things that gamers are looking forward to.

I am guessing you are being ironic in that statement but even if it were it is an amazing platform for so many varieties of gameplay it really does have something for everyone. trading, exploring, racing, mining, manufacturing, spying, salvage (and perhaps in the future even space construction) and that’s just the most exciting non-combat jobs off the top of my head. Then you have your militias, bounty hunters, pirates, etc. and each of those has many possible gameplay subsets, such as investigative mechanics as a bounty hunter, and corresponding countermeasures for pirates and criminals.

I figured as much, it just made me think of just how many awesome games it could potentially be better than on accident just from the latest progress reports. To clarify, this game could actually pull off a better battlefield 2142 sequel than the now EA run DICE. If they do mech ground combat I wouldn’t be surprised if it were hailed as a true successor to the original Mechwarriors. And with the guiding hand of crytek and their FPS model to build off of there is no reason it won’t be extremely polished on that end. And we all already know Roberts and friends are the best of the best in the industry when it comes to making cool shit that flies.

Very true, Mr Wing Commander knows his stuff. I’m just worried about the overall scope of the game. They seem to be extremely ambitious. If they can pull it off though then this will probably shoot past many other games. This is a Kickstater game after all, so one has to be wary.

          • Jason Martin

            March 13, 2014 at 23:10

It WAS a kickstarter campaign to prove a concept to some established investment firms. But that turned out not to be necessary, and I think it’s perfectly reasonable what they have added on since the 23 million mark (what was need to cover development of the initial iteration of the persistant universe which is still all we will get on it’s actual release day. So far as I can gather that will include all modules and goals up to those announced at 21 million will be present in some form in game, with everything announced past that tagged for post release. With some exceptions like the alternate starter ship of course, which will likely be available on release.

I agree im also cautious about it but Chris Roberts have allot of experience in this genre if you look at Privateer/Starlancer/Freelance/Strike Commander/Wing Commander I believe he is the only person in the world that can pull it of.

Because Microsoft owned Origin and had a deadline for the game to meet that resulted in many planned features being excluded, causing Chris Roberts and some others to leave the company and make the film studio that infamously produced the Wing Commander movie, but also some newer movies you might not know he was responsible for such as Lucky Number Sleven and Lord of War.

For all intents and purposes this is the sequel to Freelancer that never was, or viewed another way; What Freelancer could have been given more development time and a better install base in higher end pc hardware, only now they are future proofing it for 4k displays since that is just on the horizon.

I actually think my 2x 7970 crossfire wont be able to run this game on full graphics.

To put it into perspective the 2x SLI TITANS will run Battlefield 4 with a average of 160fps on ultra.
