Star Wars Republic Commando had some incredible ideas for sequels

Republic Commando nearly had incredible sequels

If you’re a Star Wars fan in any capacity and haven’t played the classic Republic Commando first-person shooter from nearly a decade ago, you’re doing yourself an injustice. The squad-based shooter featuring a tight-knit team of four clone troopers was a top-notch experience that offered a different look at a universe dominated by Jedi with lightsabers, and I join thousands of other fans in lamenting that there still isn’t a sequel.

Especially when a sequel was once in early development, with writers at the now defunct Lucusarts discussing two stories they could tell with a potential follow-up. Speaking to Cinelinx, lead developer on Republic Commando, Brett Douville, revealed that two very different directions were being discussed for the sequel, both of which sound like they could’ve been stellar to experience in the now written-off expanded universe.

There were two competing stories that were being pitched, one being developed by Tim Longo and one by lead level designer Kevin Schmitt. In one, you would have played the side story of Revenge of the Sith and carried out Order 66, hunting down Jedi as a team. In the other, Sev would have been the first man in the Rebellion army — the tagline was something like, “Every Rebellion begins with a single soldier.”

Now I’m a fan of Revenge of the Sith (it’s probably one of the better prequel films) but I still cringe every time I see how the galaxy’s most feared warriors with lightsabers went down like punks when Emperor Palpatine issued Order 66. A game following a squad of Clone Troopers hunting far more intelligent cells of Jedi sounds like an incredible idea, only just edging out the idea of experiencing the birth of a clone trooper rebellion. Something which Disney has already dabbled with in Star Wars Rebels.

Sadly these ideas never even made it to the executive level, with Lucusarts restructuring well before Douville and his team had a chance. Of course we all know what happened years later, so a new hope for a Republic Commando rests solely with Disney now. Although with the success of Battlefront last year, who knows? Maybe it’s the perfect time to revisit idea like these. I certainly wouldn’t mind.

  1. Even though I don’t like Star Wars, RC was an amazing game, one that I thoroughly enjoyed. Also that cliffhanger ending suuuuucked. Always hoped they would make a sequel 🙁

haha, never give up hope you say? …. maybe, I personally believe this game would do extremely well in this day and age. People are craving tactical shooters…that you play ALONE. Rainbow Six looks like a great game but there really isn’t much in the way of SP games like that.

SW The Old Republic, and specifically the Shadow of Revan expansion that came out last year.

The F2P model is very much greedy-bastid-EA annoying, but the stories are pretty good. Not at the same level as KOTOR I / II, but still pretty damn good, and there are 8 of them to play through, not just one.

And you can often pick up a new account key with 30 days subs time on it for $5-7 from G2A, which is a bargain, as it gives you the base game and ALL the expansions up to the current chapter they’ve released for the latest expansion, and also avoids all the annoying F2P restrictions.

I wrote and was published a short Scif-fi story when I was high school (in some inter-school anthology, not a big deal for publishing!) about a character who went out in the reaches of space and returned changed, 100s of years later, with an alien species and a vast fleet at his back, with him leading the military.

I think perhaps that is why I want to see Revan’ story end so badly.

          wee need all of them,

New Kotor, new republic commondo and new proper Jedi Knight/Dark Forces. My gaming wet dream would be a Star Wars RTS done by Chris Taylor.

sadly we will most probably see new Battlefield/front game every few years from now on.

I am not sure I agree. Focus on Kotor 3, do it well, then it is successful, funding will flow for the others. I think it is the one with the highest chance of success (ok, that is my own wishful thinking, I think a proper commando sequel would win, I just would not like it)

Disney certainly have enough resources to do the lot especially now with the new movies can not see why everything will not sell like hot cakes. Except for Jedi Knight and RC the others are different gaming styles so would need different dev teams in any case.

Can not see how Disney can not see how these games are pure gold mines.
Mass Effect style + Star Wars + the movie script writers you already have on your books =$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

yeah, I do agree with you. But as in so much in the entertainment industry,it needs to be done for solid reasons, someone has a good script or something. We love and care about these games and characters (Kotor I mean) and would feel betrayed if some generic game was created by a team of talented people, but not by a team of passionate talented people. I would rather wait. Obsidian making Kotor 2 was a labour of love for them, as was Bioware on Kotor 1.
